Name of Institution: University of Denver

Name of First Year Seminar: Inequality in Schools & Sports Professor Liz Drogin, Writing Program

Abstract of the First Year Seminar:

In this service-learning seminar we will partner with, volunteer for, learn from, and write about America SCORES Denver, a local nonprofit that runs an afterschool enrichment program for low-income youth in Denver. One afternoon each week, we will serve as assistant coaches, helping SCORES staff implement the organization’s literacy and/or sports curriculum. We will prepare for this collaboration by reading scholarly and popular texts that examine urban schools and sports, particularly through the lenses of race-ethnicity, social class, and gender. Our written work will include weekly blog posts, critical essays, and an independent research project. Throughout the quarter we will strive to heighten our critical thinking, writing, research, and presentation skills, while deepening our understanding of inequality in schools and sports. Please note that his class requires weekly excursions into the community, including at least one weekday afternoon (M-Th 3:30-5:50pm).
