Name of Institution: University of Georgia

Name of First Year Seminar: Global Engagement Learning Community Seminar Professor Pratt W. Cassity, Environment and Design

Abstract of the First Year Seminar:

The Global Engagement Learning Community meets weekly to explore cultural issues, the meaning of global citizenship, and the fundamentals of service-learning. The seminar focuses on these issues by encouraging participation in local events, exhibits and lectures on campus, along with volunteer experiences. The process of discovery is framed by an understanding of urban spaces and how people use them. Concentration is placed on local and global heritage preservation and resource conservation programs as well as physical planning policies that have social impacts. The seminar structure of the fall semester is replaced with an active service-learning democratic classroom experience during the spring where students design, execute and sustain service projects. The project(s) pursued result in measurable impacts and lasting benefits.
