Abstract of the First Year Seminar:

The physical aspects of a community as well as the level and meaningfulness of civic engagement can have great impact on the quality of life citizens lead. The Communities and Planning seminar will explore the physical and social elements of community, planning and land use issues and the meaning of community involvement and public service. Methods will include instruction on the basic tenets of community planning, land use and community participation; site visits to understand concepts of sustainable growth; interactive discussions with various public service and outreach and academic units of the University that impact communities; participation in local events and culminate in project(s) to initiate community improvement.
