What's Your Big Idea Category? (please bold which one)

- Student Leadership & Development

- Community Partnerships & Impact

- Campus Culture & Coordination

- Policy & Elections

VISION

In 400 words or less, please describe your Big Idea. What is it and why have you decided to work on it this year? How may it strengthen your program, campus, and/or community?

Our Big Idea is to help introduce the Bonner Scholars Program students to the rest of the Atlanta University Center and encourage them to be civically engaged with the program. We plan to formally introduce ourselves to the Atlanta University Center through a series of events and service projects aimed at our 4 service areas, to be lead off with a presentation/timeline showcasing the tremendous changes made to the West End Community through the help and dedication of the Bonner Scholars Program participants. At the start of the week we will formally introduce the campus to the staff and to the students, following we will begin with our first service project by the name of Project Linus, a project whose purpose is to provide a sense of security warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized , or otherwise in need, through gifts of new handmade blankets and Afghans. Here we will join together Bonner Scholars as well as the rest of the campus community together in an effort to make upwards of 50 blankets for our local branch. The other days will include the building of a community garden at a local elementary school and a health and wellness fair to encourage healthy lifestyles for college students. Finally our week will be closed off with a Community Service Jam that will serve as a time of fun and reflection on the wonderful things accomplished throughout the week.

STRATEGY

In 400 words or less, please describe your strategy. The following questions should draw out the tools, resources, and support you are using to promote and achieve your Big Idea. You'll have a chance to flesh out your plan, but here is a chance to get the basics down:

  • Which Bonner staff on your campus has committed to helping you achieve this Big Idea?
    • Program Coordinator: Sheryl Belizare
    • Program Assistant: Kiesha Cooper
  • Who's on your team? Please share how you may be involving:
    • Fellow Bonners (Each Bonner Scholars Class)
    • Other students on Spelman's campus and the other AUC institutions
    • Community partners:
      • Project Linus Representative
      • American Cancer Society Representative
      • American Heart Association Representative
      • American Diabetes Association Representative
      • Local Elementary School
      • Atwood Community Garden
  • What resources will you leverage to help you achieve your Big Idea?
    • Upper Manley Concourse Center Wall
    • Spelman College Campus
    • Health and Wellness Center
  • What three things will you accomplish by the end of this academic year (think SLI 2012)?
    • We will have pulled off Bonner Week

RESULTS

A good Big Idea proposal is one that connects with broader goals you may have for your program, campus, or community. Please answer the question below, which should help you think through those larger themes.

  • What will be different in 2015 as a result of your Big Idea (thinking in a 3-year strategic plan)?
    •  We hope that the AUC community will have a better preception of the Bonner program and its members, viewing us less like the young women who HAVE to volunteer, and more like the students impacting the community in which our institution resides.
    •  We hope that building our campus culture through this week will allow us to be able to join together on greater causes and make an impact on a problem that is not only felt within the West End community or even just within the state of Georgia but an impact felt around the world. We feel that it is important that the rest of the campus know who we are and see that we can help bring their visions of change to reality.
    • We hope that the students of the AUC will be more open to working with us on common-interest service projects so that we can have a greater impact within our student community and beyond.

TIMELINE

Please draft some of your benchmark goals into the framework below:

  • Bonner Congress October 19-21, 2012: Detailed outline of Bonner Week has been generated.
  • MLK Day January 21, 2013: A date will have been set and materials will have been ordered.
  • IMPACT Conference February 21-24, 2013: Bonner Week will have happened or will occur soon.
  • SLI June 5-8, 2013: The new representatives should be planning additional conponents to the Big Idea or planning a new one.
