Bonner Global Village:
Malawi
A partnership with YouthCare Ministries
Partnership History
This partnership was founded as one of the Bonner Global Village Network's pilot sites in May 2012 in partnership with the YouthCare Ministries, a local partner of Urban Promise International. This partnership was inspired by the international service of one of our participating campuses, The College of New Jersey.
About this Community: Malawi
Malawi, formerly known as Nyasaland, was a British colony until 1963. Malawi gained independence in 1964 and i s currently governed by President Bingu wa Mutharika. Although Malawi is a land rich with natural beauty and historical culture, Malawi is currently the 5th poorest nation in the world, ranking with Somalia near the bottom of Africa’s per capita income. Besides the burden of overwhelming poverty, Malawi’s inhabitants are being ravaged by the growing pandemic of HIV/AIDS, which has infected an estimated 16% of the total population. Tragically, this little land has earned the nickname “The Orphan Nation” because of the one million children who have been left alone in the wake of this disease.
Projects and Programs
YouthCare was established in 2003 to reach the orphaned street children of Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Many of these children were previously living on the streets trying to fend for their survival. YouthCare Ministries operates the SafeHaven orphanage for 12 boys, providing a safe home, food, discipleship, and education. They also operate an After School Programs for over 100 children, and are opening an orphanage for girls. YouthCare exists to lift the lives of at risk, orphaned and vulnerable children and youth with education, life skills, spiritual growth, leadership capacity and basic physical needs.
