Spelman in Belize City, March 2010

March 5, Saturday

11am: Arrive Belize City airport, chartered bus transport to Guest House in Belize City

1pm: Lunch at local restaurant, Country Introductions and Orientations(safety protocol,

country history, site location, etc)

3pm: Walking tour of Belize City, witnessing public and private schools, health clinics,

local food market, bus station, impoverished communities alongside Belize City’s

polluted river, waterfront, local cultural institutions, etc

6pm: Dinner with Carol Babb, Deputy Chief Education Officer, Ministry of Education,

Comprehensive Orientation to Programming, Introductions of

stakeholders/community and student leaders

8pm: Return to Guest House

March 6, Sunday

8am: Breakfast in the Guest House

10am: Walk over to Anglican Cathedral College (ACC), tour school grounds

11am: Meet with school facultyand student leaders of the Youth Leadership Council

(YLC). Share introductions with student leaders of YLC, discuss plans for the

upcoming week of collaboration

1pm: Lunch at ACC with YLC leaders and school staff

2pm: Meet with Christina Smith, current acting Director of the YLC and Youth for the

Ministry of Education to plan for the week of programming with the YLC. Continue

Discussions and planning for programming with YLC and school faculty

3:30pm: Visit to local municipality, school, and institution, based on Spelman students

interests

6pm: Dinner in Belize City, preparation for following day

March 7-11, Monday- Friday

7am: Breakfast at the Guest House

8am: Walk over to ACC, Begin Program

NOTE:Programming with the YLC will be based on Spelman student interests, and conversations with the YLC on projects prioritized for their week with Spelman mentors. The following are potential projects/programs with the YLC:

  • Tutoring on school standardized tests, homework, projects of ACC students during school hours, assist teachers with lessons

  • Execution of workshops devised by Spelman students (Self-empowerment, Leadership, Team Building, Life Skills, Money Management, Community Service, Multicultural Mediation, Career Counseling, etc)

  • Training YLC members to create their own workshops for students at the ACC

  • Collaborating with the YLC and other student groups in growing and developing effective systems for Student Group; meetings, membership, school functions, collaborating with other high schools and student groups

  • Mentorship for the youth to meet with principals, plan annual programming and create structures for leadership that last throughout the year

  • Support YLC in planning community and education projects that they hope to execute this year

  • HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign and education at the ACC, training YLC members to be HIV/AIDS educators

  • Set up a system of continued communication and mentorship between Spelman Bonner Scholars and YLC leaders, throughout the year by way of video conference, email, and/or letters

  • Paint a mural at the ACC alongside students to celebrate their culture and leadership

12pm: Lunch at the ACC

1pm: Continue Program, or other afternoon excursion

  • One afternoon group will visit Altun Ha Archeological Site. Altun Ha features a medium sized classic Mayan site. Set in the tropical jungle, Altun Ha provides a unique experience into the culture and history of the Maya and biological diversity.

4:30pm: Return to Guest House

6pm: Dinner at a local restaurant in Belize City

  • Friday dinner will be a farewell alongside local community leaders and YLC students at the ACC

March 12, Saturday

8am: Breakfast at Guest House

9am: Water Taxi to Caye Caulker, tropical island off the coast of Belize City, check in to

island hotel

11am: Group excursions can be planned: snorkeling, visiting reefs, etc

1pm: Lunch in Caye Caulker

2pm: Group excursions continued, and island enjoyment

6pm: Dinner at local restaurant on Caye Caulker

March 13, Sunday

9am: Breakfast

10am: Water Taxi to Belize City

11am: Bus to Belize City airport for departure
