Campus Visit Format

 

Ice Breaker & Check-In: I would do it this way:

  • Visiting school member check in:

    • Each Bonner shares information about themselves:

      • Name

      • Year

      • Hometown

      • Type of service/service site

      • One word to describe their banner experience

      • Why they are excited to participate in the campus visits

      • Any other pertinent information

  • Although Bonners have the uncanny ability to become friends fast, it is necessary to break the ice with a variety of activities. This would be an excellent time to highlight a “Bonner Bests,” sharing their favorite ice breaker or getting to know you activity. Getting to know you activities:

    • Shuffle Your Bun: incorporates personality traits/personal experience and movement. [insert link to explanation of shuffle your buns].

Tour of Bonner Center, campus, and community:

  • Before discussing issues areas and program details, it will be helpful for the visiting school to become acquainted with the Bonner Center, campus, and community. Experiencing the campus and community will allow the visiting Bonner school to see the layout and structure of the communities surrounding the school’s Bonner Program.

 

Discuss Bonner Programs:

  • This would be a time for the Bonner schools to discuss the methods and best practices that they used to successfully run their Bonner’s programs. It may be useful for the Bonner school to assemble a panel of senior interns and congress reps who work closely with their program director/coordinator in running the program. By exchanging best practices and methods, each Bonner school will be given new resources and ideas to add to their program’s tool kit. This exchange of methods will help schools strengthen their program and become an additional resource for the program’s future.

  • Examples Questions/Topics:

    • How are your Bonner meetings structured? What kind of information is presented at Bonner meeting?

    • Do you have Bonner retreats? How are your retreats structured? What kind of information and education do you discuss at retreats?

    • In what ways do your Bonner Program and Bonner Scholars encourage non-Bonner students to become active in service?

    • Are your Bonner Scholars active in your Bonner Community? How do you encourage Bonners to serve on committees and attend Bonner related events?

Explore an issue area:

  • Discussing best practices and program methods is helpful, but it is important to incorporate higher levels of collaboration into the campus visit. Most communities experience similar problems, such as education, poverty, and hunger; each community utilizes different methods in order to address a particular issue area. By exchanging ideas and initiatives surrounding an issue area, each school will be more equipped to tackle the issues facing their community.

  • It would be ideal for the school to allow one or two students who are site supervisors or demonstrate high levels of passion for the specific issue area to explain how the Bonners and local community help address a particular issue area by:

    • Provide background on how the issue area affects the community.

    • Explain how Bonners are involved with issue area.

    • Discuss any initiatives created by a community partner or Bonner program to address the issue area.

    • When possible, tour the site(s) the Bonners work with in order to address the issue area.

    • Discuss the future of Bonners involvement with the issue area.

Begin planning goals:

  • During the visit, the schools should hold a strategic planning session (BVP - Archives: Issue to Impact -> capacity building) to create goals that ensure continued communication; these primary goals should be simple and attainable. One or two long term, regional goals may also be of some value.

    • Simple goals:

      • Monthly e-mail updates

      • Semester Skype conference call

    • Long term goals:

      • Joint First Year Trip

      • Sophomore Exchange based around the issue area explored

      • Mini-conference based around issue area explored

Bonner Bonding:

  • During the campus visit, Bonners should have an unstructured time for “Bonner Bonding.” This could easily take place in the form of a lunch or dinner. Bonner bonding is vital in helping students connect on a more personal level and it allow students to exchange information about themselves, their school, and their experience as a Bonner.

 

Video documentation:

 

  • Over the duration of the campus visit, both schools should keep track of the visit by recording short video clips i of the discussions and activities.

  • Suggested video clips:

    • Campus tour

    • Community tour

    • Issue area site tour

    • Discussion sections

    • Strategic planning, and any other

    • Bonner related activities that occur during the visit.

    • Interviews with Bonner student or community members

  • After the campus visit is complete, a video can be made to review the visit and to be used as a future resource. These videos can also be shared across the Nation Bonner Network, allowing other schools working with similar issue areas to learn about the school’s unique ideas and methods.

 

Conclusion/wrap up binder:

  • After the trip, Oberlin Bonners will create a binder to recap the visit and share new information acquired during the visit. Hopefully this binder will hopefully be added to each time Oberlin participates in a campus visits. The binder can then be used for further planning surrounding programs and issue area development.

  • Items to be included in the binder:

    • New best practices

    • Recap the issue area:

      • State issue area

      • Identify the service site(s)

      • State the initiates

      • Explain the involvement

      • Other pertinent information

    • List of goals from strategic planning session

    • Include personal reflections of the campus visit from each participant
