3) MLK Day of Service - January 16, 2012

MLK Day of Service is right around the corner!  Remember this is a day on for NJ AmeriCorps members!  Members are invited to participate in a collaborative MLK Day of Service event sponsored by the City of Trenton, The College of New Jersey, the Bonner Foundation, and Jersey Cares.  On Monday, January 16th we will host our second MLK Day of Service under the City of Service Initiative launched one year ago.  The event will begin with an opening ceremony at Trenton Central High School at 9 am.  Following the ceremony, service activities will commence.  Participants will paint murals and walls around the inside of the school as well as assemble crafts which will be donated to various community shelters.  Service activities will end around 12:30/1pm. No lunch will be provided.

Please remember that all NJ AmeriCorps members are required to serve on MLK Day.  If your campus or agency is hosting its own service event on MLK Day then your Member(s) may participate in that event rather than ours.

4) Food Stamped Documentary

The Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton is pleased to announce a screening of the documentary Food Stamped at the Princeton Public Library on Sunday, January 29 from 1 pm to 3 pm.  The event is free and open to the public.   This humorous and award-winning documentary, directed by Shira and Yoav Potash, follows the couple as they attempt to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet within a budget of a $1.00 per meal (per person), the approximate amount of food stamp benefits for low-income Americans. Along the way, the filmmakers consult with members of Congress, food justice organizations, nutrition experts and people living on food stamps. For more on the film, visit www.foodstamped.com. Panel discussion and Q&A will include the film's directors via Skype, Julia Hicks de Peyster, a former Princeton resident and graduate of Princeton University ('86), who attempted to feed her family of five on the allotted food stamp budget for forty days, and the Crisis Ministry's Hunger Prevention Director Mark Smith. Moderator will be Liz Cohen of Yes We CAN! Food Drives, which supports the Crisis Ministry. This screening of Food Stamped is part of the 2012 Princeton Environmental Film Festival and is co-sponsored by the Princeton Public Library, Crisis Ministry, and Yes We CAN! Food Drives.  For information on the Princeton Public Library's film festival and for directions and parking: www.princetonlibrary.org/peff

Edge Hall. With support from the AtlantiCare Foundation, the conference will highlight collaborations in southern New Jersey among higher education, not-for-profit organizations, K-12 schools and community organizers who are bringing good food and nutrition education solutions to the region. The conference will be of interest to educators, healthcare providers, agricultural professionals, philanthropists, and students seeking degrees in education, healthcare, social sciences, agriculture and/or the culinary arts.

Registration each day will be at 9 a.m. Presentations will begin at 9:45 a.m. The conference will go until 4 p.m. Friday and 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The conference agenda Friday will feature Farm to School projects including the introduction of newly developed food products made from New Jersey-grown produce developed through the Rutgers Food Innovation Center. Organizers will also share results from a statewide Farm to School survey the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Division of Family and Community Health Sciences conducted.

7) IMPACT Conference

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the 2012 IMPACT National Conference, to be hosted once again at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.

The IMPACT Conference is historically the largest gathering in the country focused on the civic engagement of college students in community service, service-learning, community-based research, advocacy and other forms of social action. Building on the rich 26-year tradition of the COOL Conference and the Idealist Campus Conference, IMPACT is the one time during the year when students, administrators, faculty, AmeriCorps members and VISTAs, and nonprofit professionals gather together to share resources and exchange stories.
