Big Idea – 2010-2011

Your Proposal:

 

Why? Why did you choose this particular option for strengthening your program? What is the background surrounding your topic? What is the project’s significance?

This is the beginning of our second year for the Bonner Leaders at Young Harris College. Though we grew from 8 Bonners last year to 16 this year, and though we have increased our recognition across the campus and through the surrounding community, we still believe we need to be more widely known among the student body. Also, the campus lost a volunteer coordinator last year and does not plan on replacing the position. Consequently, we as the Bonner Leaders feel the need to take the lead in helping to  better promote community outreach in general - especially community outreach that is sustained throughout a semester or a year and not simply a one-time experience.

 

What? What is your idea for strengthening your program? What effect will your project have?

Our big idea is to pilot a small Bonner Partner Program. Although we tried to lay the groundwork for such a program component last year, our time and energy were taken up with building a foundation for the Bonner Leader program in general. With this foundation now in place, we feel like we are in a good position to move forward with this proposal. We plan to start with between 5-10 Bonner Partners, conduct brief interviews with them to familiarize them with site options, determine which site they are interested in, and talk with them about how many hours a week they feel they can handle at the site. They will sign Bonner Partner Agreements that outlines this arrangement and be invited to attend our bi-weekly Bonner meetings, be eligible to go on Bonner trips, and will receive official recognition from the College on their transcript for the hours they worked. We hope the effect our big idea will have is to broaden the recognition of the Bonner Program at Young Harris and to foster an increased level in sustained community engagement. We believe it will also serve as a good recruiting tool, as well.

 

How? How will you implement your Big Idea? What skills and best practices will be useful for your project’s success? Who can be on your team to help implement or advise your project? How can your Congress experience help your project achieve its goals? What is the ideal timeline for your project’s completion?

We will begin small with five to ten students this semester, assess the program, and grow it in the spring or during the next academic year, provided things are going well. The Director will oversee the program, but the senior intern and the congress representatives will carry out most of the work. In addition to those team members, we will also draw upon other appropriate YHC staff, such as the Director of Campus Activities, as well as the other current Bonners. Each Bonner Partner will be matched with a congress representative, as well as with another Bonner who works at his or her site. We will use our Congress experience to talk with representatives from other Bonner institutions that have similar programs (we heard about Bonner Partners at a Bonner conference last year). We already have a list of interested students and paperwork that we can adapt. We will begin setting up the interviews and matching students to sites within a few weeks. Though assessment will be ongoing, we will do a major review at the end of the semester, as well as a second one at the end of the academic year.
