Big Creek People In Action, Inc. was founded in 1990 by citizens of McDowell County, West Virginia. Since that time, this nonprofit organization has been serving the community of McDowell County in the realms of education and literacy, leadership development, volunteer service, service learning, arts and culture, housing, recreation, and collaborative partnerships. BCPIA's vision of McDowell County is one of empowered and self-sufficient people living in communities that are economically vibrant, democratic, and socially just.
While in Caretta we learned about the many issues facing communities in the Coal mining communities of the mountain south such as unemployment, prescription drug abuse and loss of environmental sustainability due to mountain top removal. For our service we were split into two groups with one group removing and rebuilding a front porch for an elderly couple, and the second group painting the exterior of the home of a young family in need.

SECOND YEAR EXCHANGE:
- A Community Partner Workshop was held over the summer to continue relationship building and engage in an Asset Building Community Development process. Good conversations and connections around the assets of volunteers but need for transportation emerged. There were some new agencies attending who were introduced to the Bonner program and other activities of the Center.
- Service on Saturday (SOS) is a Bonner sponsored event which includes participants from the campus at large. This past year we were involved in a wide range of service activities through SOS:
- September- Boys & Girls Club's Day for Kids
- December- Caroling at Plaza Towers retirement community
- February- Yard Sale for Haiti
- March- Relay for Life
- April- Humane Society
- May- End of Year Clothes Drive
--->Through S.O.S. we are expanding and fostering a campus culture based on community and service; and strengthening our relationships with our Community Partners.

GMS MENTORING PROGRAM: YOUTH ENRICHMENT
A Brief Overview:
After reviewing research conducted by Bonner Leader, Estefania Chavez (2010), on the incidences of truancy in area schools, the TC Bonner Leaders partnered with the George Clem Multicultural Association and Greeneville Middle School to develop a mentoring program aimed at potentially at-risk 6th graders. The Middle School’s Administration identified 25 possible students for the program. Out of those 25, ten signed up and seven attended meetings and events consistently. The Mentors for 2009-10 were made up of Bonner Leaders, non-Bonner students and community members from the GCMA.
The group meets once a week during the school year at GMS, and gets together once a month for special enrichment activities on Tusculum’s campus and in the community.
The goals of the program are:
- Engage students in enrichment activities that create a feeling of community involvement & membership
- Foster Relationships with college students to motivate youth to stay in school and consider college

- Bonner Program or Campus-Wide Wiki status: We use Wiki for reflection journals, looking into and posting Service On Saturday events. Our Wiki contains TC Bonner specific resources for our members to utilize. In addition we post event pictures, videos and other media to share with the entire campus and community.
