Introducing the Bonner Global Village Network

In cooperation with the Peacework Development Fund, the Bonner Foundation is launching the Bonner Village Network, a pattern of global engagement through service that strategically and systematically addresses some of the most critical global issues of our day.

Programmatic Goals

  • providing an infrastructure for sustainable and strategic international service
  • establishing 10 or more Bonner colleges' work over a period of 5 years in 10 or more strategic communities in the key disciplines of business, education, health, engineering, and agriculture
  • enabling students to develop skills and knowledge areas in an international context that is coherent with the Bonner student developmental model

Impact Analysis & Assessement

We envision "Youth and Poverty" as being a common theme across international communities, with schools potentially layering on other priority areas according to their interests and the communities needs.

Building the Bonner Global Village: Upcoming Trips and Opportunities

Join Bonner Partner Organization Teach on the Beach and serve in one of the inaugural Bonner Villages of the Bonner Global Village Network!

Teach on the Beach is an international nonprofit organization connecting compassionate global citizens with the underprivileged youth of developing countries through our community programs utilizing travel and technology. Our As part of our long term efforts, Volunteers help these youth to grow up to be a generation of leaders, teachers, and activists for positive change.

  • 2012 Bonner Global Village: Summer Internship Program (PDF)
    • Join us on the beach to live, breathe, eat and teach Ghana. Our site supervisors are on the ground all summer so Bonners can arrive and depart when is most convenient for them anytime between May 25th and August 15th.

Bonners will work in eight Belizean primary schools — engaging children in technical skill building, academic preparation, social entrepreneurship, and college preparation programs. Additionally, Bonner participants in the trip will receive training on inter- national development as well as engage in strategic planning to grow the Bonner Global Village Network to 25 international communities!

Vision

The purpose of building International Partnerships in the Bonner Network is to develop sustainable internationally-focused partnerships and to supplement existing international service programs within the Bonner Network with more coordinated support and resources. Doing so will increase impact on the student experience, individual campus internationalization initiatives, and the international communities partnered with our institutions.

This vision grows out the Bonner Program’s common commitment to international perspective, which seeks to cultivate global citizens that:

    •  embrace cultural diversity
    •  understand the nature of global interdependence
    •  examine issues in their local and global contexts
    •  consider the accuracy, relevancy and influence of their worldview
    •  explore and respect the views and values of others

Ultimately, we envision the Bonner Global Village Network to happen through the following partnerships and resources, offering Bonners the following series of options of how to connect their international service experience with the broader network:

  • International Partner Directory
    •  an opportunity for Bonners to serve with sites that other Bonners have served with in the past
  • Bonner Village Network
    •  an opportunity for Bonners to serve with a series of campus-community relationships maintained by Bonner schools and facilitated by Peacework
  • SIT-Bonner Study Abroad Programs
    •  an opportunity for Bonners to pursue SIT study abroad programs at a reduced rate through the SIT-Bonner grant program

Objectives

  • Collect Data - Winter 2011
    • Staff Planning | a series of roundtable discussions and workshops at SLI to lay the groundwork for this initiative
    • Network-Wide Survey |  gathers the international engagement of the 80+ American colleges and universities in the Bonner Network

  • Develop Network Resources - Spring 2012
    • International Partner Program Library | documents international partnerships throughout the Bonner Network, based on levels of partnership
    • Outcome-Based Development Model for International Engagement | outlines the outcomes for staff, students, institutions, and international partner organizations/communities
    • Framework for International Partnerships | applies the Bonner Program's domestic partnership approach to an international context focused on strategic, sustainable, multi-layered, and reciprocal campus-community partnerships
    • Training Series for International Engagement | equips students with appropriate skills and reflection opportunities before, during, and after the international service experience

  • Establish the Bonner Village Network - Summer 2012
    • Pilot Informal Cluster Programs | connects teams of Bonner schools working in the same countries or region, establishing small networks to increase capacity of the programs and the communities they serve (connections drawn out of the international partner program library)
    • Establish a Formal Network of International Bonner "Villages" | identifies "host" campuses that have strong relationships with a particular international community, then enables students from the 80+ colleges in the Bonner Network to serve with this small, committed number of Bonner "villages" through the host institutions (Peacework model)
