April 26th: HomeFront ArtSpace Gallery Opening in Princeton

The ArtSpace program of HomeFront is pleased to announce an upcoming art and poetry exhibit that will explore the reality of homelessness and poverty from the perspective of artists who reside in homeless shelters operated by HomeFront.

The exhibit combines research that was completed by a Harvard and Princeton Professor on how we judge and perceive homeless and poor individuals, with a direct reaction to the research by HomeFront clients who have created poetry and artwork that will be on exhibit at the Bernstein Gallery at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School.

The exhibit also features a panel discussion that will explore the research. The lead Researcher, Dr. Amy Cuddy, is so taken by our project that she has agreed to lead the panel discussion on April 26, 2010.

Additional information about this upcoming exhibition is included in the flyer that is attached.

I encourage you to participate in this exhibition and panel discussion. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Best,

Emily Lewis

Volunteer Opportunities

April 24th: Earn Hours throughout NJ on Comcast Volunteer Day

I’m excited to announce that Saturday, April 24th is Comcast Cares Day – a national day of service for Comcast employees throughout the country! Since the first Comcast Cares Day in 2001 more than 230,000 volunteers have contributed over 1.3 million hours of service at more than 2,300 project sites in local communities. Last year we had more than 60,500 volunteers contributing more than 360,000 hours of service at 600 sites.

This year we have some terrific projects planned throughout NJ and attached you’ll find a list of the projects we are doing throughout the area and a short description of each.  We’ve extended invitations to many of our local community partners to work alongside our Comcast employees that day, and I thought I’d make you aware of these projects in case you’d like to share the list of events with other groups – including AmeriCorps -- that may care to volunteer with us that day. I also thought you might like to share it with Wendy Galloway, who I understand is the new Director of Programs at the Department of State. I’ve heard Wendy speak at several events and she’ll no doubt be a tremendous asset in her new position. We’d certainly love to have you and Wendy join us if possible.

If interested, please let me know and we’ll register your volunteers and provide more specific project information. Lunch and T-shirts are on Comcast!

April 25th: Earth Day with Princeton School Gardens Cooperative

Represent AmeriCorps at a Jon Bon Jovi Concert in the Meadowlands!

Dear National Service and Volunteer Advocates and Colleagues,

Bon Jovi will be playing at the Meadowlands on May 27, 28, and 29. We will have the opportunity to send 6 volunteers per night to the concert to staff the Serve.gov promotional table. It would be great if we could have a diverse representation of the National Service and Volunteer community in NJ so we can discuss a broad array of opportunities with interested concert goers.

I am required to let you know that volunteers serving at the table will unfortunately not receive free concert tickets in exchange for their volunteer service. Please contact rgrinstead@bonner.org know if you would like to volunteer on any of these evenings and please also pass this announcement on to your AmeriCorps and VISTA members and Senior Corps Volunteers.
