CAMPUS AT A GLANCE
Although its founding year is 1871, the University in fact has deeper roots tracing from West Chester Academy, a private, state-aided school that existed from 1812 to 1869. The academy enjoyed strong support from the highly intellectual Chester County Cabinet of the Natural Sciences of the Pre-Civil War decades. It was recognized as one of Pennsylvania's leading preparatory schools, and its experience in teacher training laid the groundwork for the normal school years that were to follow.
West Chester University, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is a public, regional, comprehensive institution committed to providing access and offering high-quality undergraduate education, select post-baccalaureate and gradute programs, and a variety of educational and cultural resources for its students,
alumni, and citizens of southeastern Pennsylvania.

MORE ABOUT US
At Barclay Friends Assisted Living, Bonners mentor elderly buddies once a week or more; they design and implement socials each month, such as poker games, fashion shows, sewing/knitting, and sing alongs. Many relationships last well beyond their Bonner experience.
Bonners at the Care Center give academic support to needy children in the preschool and after-school programs; they learn good study habits and enhance their literacy skills. The younger children learn the fundamentals they need to enter kindergarten.
At Neighborhood Hospice, both the client and family members, receive care, comfort and emotional support. Having the freedom to share their stories with an empathetic listener enhances their mental well being at such a difficult time in their lives.
Through Camp Abilities, Bonners work with disabled children. During the academic year, the children participate in activities in the gym and the pool, giving their parents a bit of free time as well. Many blind or visually impaired children are able to participate in residential sports camps in the summer where they learn athletic skills and are encouraged to keep physically active, healthy and independent.
