The University of California was charted in 1868 and UC Berkeley was its first campus. Envisioned as the "City of Learning," UC Berkeley became the flagship campus located on 1,232 acres of land that was formerly owned by the Ohlone people. The University's missions are teaching, research, and public service. Instructional programs at the undergraduate level transmit knowledge and skills to students. Bonner Leaders are divided into two groups: Campus-Based and Community-Based. 
          - Campus-Based Bonners work directly out of our Center and run core programs that were primarily established by students. Over the years, staff have provided more direct supervision and oversight, advising, and support in maintaining long-term relationships with community partners to ensure institutional knowledge is passed on beyond student graduations. Bonner Leaders are working most closely with other college students who are serving. Little to no direct service is provided. Bonner Leaders develop seminar course curriculum, facilitate seminar sessions, establish community partnerships, recruit and interview student participants, and oversee program sustainability. Programs include Alternative BreaksCal in the Capital Internship Program, Cal in Local Government Internship Program, Magnolia Project (Service Trip and Internship), Creative Residencies for Emerging Arts Teaching Empowerment (CREATE), Residential Service Initiative, Volunteer Income Tax Assistant Program (VITA), and Oakland Community Builders (OCB).

 

          - Community-Based Bonners work at non-profit organizations, schools or local community agencies. Agency staff serve as the direct supervisor and Bonner Leaders are working with community members who are clients, residents, participants, and students. Some direct service is provided. In addition, Bonner Leaders are recruiting and managing volunteers, coordinating and leading workshops, conducting issue research, assessing outcomes of agency programs, outreaching to community members to raise awareness about available services, and much more.
