MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

Achievements:

Over the course of the past 11 years, CILSA has established itself on campus as a vital part of the Saint Mary’s experience.  Some student leaders work with directors of non-profit organizations in the community outside of regular class work.  Other students work with faculty members who teach courses where learning takes place in the real world.  At first blush it is easy to recognize the benefit of direct service these students provide.  What is equally important but less evident is the leadership and civic development that occurs when students take a major role and responsibility in their service and learning experiences.  As research has documented, this type of engaged learning prepares students to be good citizens in a just and democratic society.  In this way, CILSA plays an important role in transforming the lives of students who will be the business and civic leaders of tomorrow.  Faculty members continue to go above and beyond the traditional call of academic duty to create and deliver innovative courses that challenge students.  These courses not only include service, but ample opportunities for critical thinking and reflection.  All of this takes additional time, energy, and resources revealing a true commitment on the part of students and faculty.

Likewise, the work of CILSA staff goes beyond impacting students, faculty, and the local community by continuing to garner national and local attention.  Once again, Saint Mary’s College was included on the President’s Community Service Honor Roll.  CILSA staff continues to make significant contributions to the field through national presentations, publications, and consulting.  Associate Director, Dr. Jennifer Pigza published a monograph on community-based research in partnership with the Nation Community-Based Research Networking Initiative at Princeton University.  CILSA staff member, Ryan Lamberton took a leading role in organizing and convening the second annual regional student leadership conference on social justice hosted a UC Berkeley.  Jumpstart Manager, Alicia Torres, was invited to demonstrate the use of new Jumpstart curriculum to colleagues at a national training workshop.  Beth Hampson is using her masters thesis in collaboration with the SMC Office of Institutional Research to study the impact service-learning on students’ personal, civic, and faith development.  And finally, I was privileged to participate on a national round table discussion with the Association of American Colleges and Universities and Global Perspectives Initiatives to draft a formal report to the U.S. Department of Education on how to promote civic engagement in the undergraduate college experience.

RECOGNITION (Community Engagement)

Listed in USA Today as one of the twenty colleges most committed to community service.

Among Top 17 Colleges Recognized for Community Service By President Obama

In 2010-2011, approximately 40% of the student body engaged in service, and of those students, over 50% made at least a semester-long commitment.  Also in 2010-2011, 25% of SMC Federal Work Study Funds went to students who were engaged in community service.

CILSA achieved national recognition on behalf of Saint Mary’s College this year. First, Saint Mary’s was named to the The Carnegie Foundation program, Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, which honors leading schools in the service learning field. Saint Mary’s sought and received the competitiveCommunity Engagement Classification Award in December,  2008.  From across the United States, 119 colleges and universities were recognized, following a rigorous selection criteria. The foundation created its 2008 community engagement classification of schools based on applications and documentation substantiating the extent of an institution’s community engagement at local, regional, national or international levels.  Curricular Engagement includes institutions where teaching, learning and scholarship engage faculty, students, and community in mutually beneficial and respectful collaboration. Their interactions address community-identified needs, deepen students’ civic and academic learning, enhance community well-being, and enrich the scholarship of the institution.

Saint Mary’s College was also included on The Honor Roll's Presidential Award, given each year to only a handful of institutions, is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.

SPRING 2009 INITIATIVES

Serve 2.0

Her impression of this project was that it was optional-us looking for volunteers to be a part of it. Don't have staff capacity at the moment. Will look at incorporating students to take the lead on utilizing these tools.

Just had an inauguration event-500 people came

*Have one student for the spring, one student who is exiting early due to financial constraints.

Federal work study was cut by 40%.

Sent a packet to us today-the last of all the Fall paperwork. Will be more timely this spring.

Concerned about slots-being sure that we can provide them to students they have recruited

Within the month, will make choices about the size of the program next year. August 25th start date?

Economic Crisis Influences-community partners, work-study

Programmatically it is going very well!! High compliments to Ryan.

This Saturday, there is some excitement for the UC berkeley annual leadership symposium (75 Bonners from 5 schools-UC Davis, Berkeley, UC Davis, UNM). Will hear best practices and build relationships. They are preparing 3-5 minute presentation for who SILSA Bonners are. 1st time to have so many of the students to meet each other. Mike Bishop and Ryan spearheading this event.

Jennifer will be coming for the Princeton CBR meeting.

1/28 discussion with Mike Bishop about the event:

The West Coast Bonner Event will take place this Saturday, the 31st. It is a one day event tagged onto the Leadership Symposium that Calcorps started 6 years ago. Now one of their sister campuses leads it. They are incorporating this event into that symposium. The symposium is also the same day (one day event).
Time: 9am to 4pm at UC Berkeley, The Center for Student Leadership.
It is a student planned symposium. They invited Wayne to speak last year and mentioned it to him at the Director's meeting for this year.
Bonners attending (72)
Berkeley-35
St. Mary's-13
Sonoma St-5 (also bringing 12-15 non Bonners to the event)
UC Davis-8
UC Santa Cruz-9
U of New Mexico-2
Bonner actually gave some funding for last year's event. They used the carryover for this year's. In fact, Bonner funding is paying for 90% of the reg fee.
