Implementation of Student Development

The Mercer County Community College NJ AmeriCorps Bonner Leader Program was supervised by a new campus director for the 2008-2009 academic year.  The director, Professor of Communication Donna R. Munde, was trained at the July 2008 New Bonner Directors and Coordinators meeting, and immediately after, began recruitment efforts.  Twelve students were chosen, and began their training and development immediately.  After their initial training meeting, during which they signed their paperwork and were informed about the rules, regulations and responsibilities of being a Bonner Leader, the Bonners met every other Tuesday from noon-1:30 for training, development, and event planning meetings.

Bonner Leaders attended meetings planned by the Bonner Foundation as well as opening sessions and year-end sessions organized by the New Jersey State Commission.  The MCCC Bonner Leaders also attended four mandatory service days scheduled throughout the academic year.  These service days focused on organic farming, clean waterways, homelessness, and hunger.

Meetings on the campus of MCCC generally revolved around a specific training topic.  For example, one meeting focused on stress management, another on time management and orgainzational skills, and another on resume writing.  Other meetings educated the Bonner Leaders on social issues.  For example, the author of a book on the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen was a guest speaker at one meeting, and at another meeting, a student performing research on illiteracy gave a presentation.  Still other meetings focused on planning and implementing our first campus-wide service event, which happened at the end of the spring semester.

Finally, there were two conferences attended by MCCC Bonner Leaders:  The Impact Conference in College Park, Maryland, and the SLI Conference in Florida.

Several of our Bonner Leaders edited and updated the Wiki page.

Implementation of Community Partnerships

Bonner Leaders at MCCC were engaged with four community partners this academic year:  The Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, the Trenton After-School Program, and the D.R.E.A.M. program.  Three of these partners were located in Trenton, NJ, and the D.R.E.A.M. program is housed on the West Windsor Campus of MCCC (see http://www.mccc.edu/student_services_needs_dream.shtml).  This program provides support, tutoring, and education for young adults with Downs Syndrome or other intellectual disabilities

Each of the community partners wrote mid-term evaluations for each Bonner Leader, and met with the Director of the MCCC program at least once each semester.

Campus-Wide Culture and Infrastructure

The Bonner Leaders initiated an ongoing project in the spring 2009 semester, collecting food, clothing and funds for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.

The Bonner Leaders also formed a Student Government Association club, called "MCCC Bonner Leaders," and made their purpose known thorughout the college through their association with with this leadership organization.
