Bonner Video Project - Issue Awareness

Page history last edited by Consuelo Gutierrez-Crosby 13 years, 11 months ago

Issue to Impact Video:

Pick an issue that you encounter while doing your community service and make a video that educates and encourages others to get involved.  It could be something as specific as testing achievement gaps for third graders in your county to something as broad as national homelessness. This is your opportunity to educate others about the issues that inspire you to take action and motivate you to serve.

 .

Please consider making this video about the same as the issue brief your school is writing.  When making this video, keep in mind the following:

  1. Have you done your homework on this issue?
  2. Are all facts and figures presented in the film accurate and attributed to the correct agency?
  3. Does it clearly communicate its purpose to its intended audience?
  4.  Is the Community partner satisfied with this film?
  5. Is it enjoyable to watch?

Commentary:  UNM does a great job with the video from the beginning.  A good introduction, which feels like a Hollywood movie, draws viewers into the story.  The use of text against a blank screen without music can be used, as UNM has done, to create a serious tone to the message.  The video also clearly explains the issue and why the Bonners are mobilizing to address it.  But these are not merely quick bullet points, the video also describes the situation so the viewer understands the full picture.  Interviews with community leaders and police officers help to demonstrate the importance of the issue to the community.

Lynchburg

Commentary:  The Lynchburg Bonners have created a video that clearly and creatively explains an issue facing their community.  The complex topic of mountain top removal is described in a way that anyone can understand the importance of the issue.  Videos like Lynchburg help viewers to understand why the need to become involved in specific issues facing their community.
