Bonner Program Start-up Planning Guide

Planning Questions – for Starting a Program


In summer 2008, Bonner Programs completed portions of their annual reports on the wiki, so that best practices can be shared across campuses.  While you are in the start-up process, we ask you to complete this template below to share your thinking and/or plans for program start-up.  This will help Foundation staff to guide you.  The entire wiki-based report can be three pages or less.  Please share information and highlights addressing the following three categories and provides a synopsis of your Bonner Program this year.


Implementation of Student Development: 

A key aspect of the Bonner Program is student development and the integration of an intentional Developmental Model through which students are supported and challenged to higher levels of leadership, skills, and knowledge.  You can review that model and worksheets that may be helpful to share with others and strategize with your colleagues and students in order to make a plan here:

How do you plan to integrate the developmental model this year within your co-curricular and service activities? (suggested one page text):

  1. Trainings, courses, & meetings (keep in mind that we suggest class- or cohort meetings at least two times per month, which include an intentional sequence of training and reflection activities)
  2. First Year Trip (see Co-Curricular Implementation Guide for more information)
  3. Second Year Exchange (see Co-Curricular Implementation Guide)
  4. Third Year (and beyond) Leadership Roles (see Student Handbook Live sections on Student Roles)
  5. Senior Capstone & Presentation of Learning (see Vocation Guide)


Implementation of Community Partnerships: 

Another key element of the Bonner Program is a focus on mutually beneficial campus-community partnerships, through which students can dedicate their time and talents over multiple semesters to making a contribution.  The type of work conducted can include many forms of direct service, capacity building, and even research.  Organizing around site-based teams and issues can enable long-term, multi-dimensional partnerships and placements, as well as ways to better achieve and measure impact . You can review the model and worksheets that may be helpful to share with others and strategize with your colleagues and students in order to make a plan here:

Please share a summary of your plans with community partners, touching in particular on the following categories (suggested one page text):

  1. Orienting and managing community partnerships (what do you currently do to include orientation, site visits, meetings with students, strategic planning and focus on long-term relationships and impact)
  2. Partners as co-educators and other unique initiatives (what kinds of work will engage community partners as educators, in training, classroom settings, and other ways?)
  3. Integration of site-based or issue-oriented teams (do you have any site-based teams currently or in the works?  what issues could you organize around?  how might you structure team management and staffing?)


Campus-wide Culture and Infrastructure: 

Another third focus area of the Bonner Program is a focus on building the campus-wide culture, infrastructure, and capacity to carry out this work in the present and long-term, engaging not only Bonners but making paving the way for all students to be exposed to service and engaged civically. Figuring out how to leverage the Bonner Program into your campus's other assets for civic engagement is important, as well as determining a governance and management structure that allows you to go to higher levels.  You can review the model and worksheets that may be helpful to share with others and strategize with your colleagues and students in order to make a plan here:

Please describe key elements and progress in the development of campus-wide infrastructure and the role of the Bonner Program in enhancing (or being enhanced by) campus-wide culture and participation in service, touching on the following (suggested one page text):

  1. What are your key relationships and activities involving faculty and academic connections?  In particular, what are you working on to engage faculty, connect to relevant coursework, define related academic pathways (such as a civic engagement minor), integrate CBR, and so on?
  2. What are the relationships and activities involving other departments or divisions on campus related to the Bonner Program and service (for example for recruitment, student wellness or retention, financial aid, and so on)?  
  3. What is your thinking about where the Bonner Program is housed on campus, what staff are involved in its start-up and daily management, and what challenges you may face institutionally?
  4. Are there any unique initiatives (such as events or strategic planning) that have enhanced (or are currently working to enhance) institutionalization of service and civic engagement on campus?
