Organization Description: Our mission is to prevent crime by providing the children of Washington, DC with structured social, recreational, athletic, and educational activities to help them develop into responsible citizens: to create safe havens in which they may play and learn; and to use positive role models to inspire them.  The Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Clubs' eight clubhouses are located throughout the city of Washington D.C. The Clubs offer sports programs, tutoring and educational programs, computer labs, life skills seminars, job and career counseling, substance abuse prevention, an Early Intervention Program, and HIV/AIDS awareness.  Camp Ernest W. Brown, a residential summer camp, is owned and operated by the Clubs. Located in Scotland, Maryland, about 80 miles south of Washington, DC, it encompasses 168 acres along the widest section of the Potomac River. Since the camp was established in 1937, it has afforded a week of respite, learning and recreation for children who reside in the city.

Internship Position

Internship Description: There are two primary areas in which students may volunteer.

Clubhouse Counselors:

These volunteers work for various clubs located in DC during the summer for our Summer Enrichment Program.  These positions are ideal for those students who will already find themselves in the District or surrounding area for the summer as we do not offer living arrangements.  These are not supplemented with a stipend and the skills are as vast as the residential camp counselor.  We are interested in working with students of all skill levels, but are mainly interested in providing a rich diversity in our volunteer community.  Background check for all positions are required and is provided by

our office at no charge.

Summer Camp Counselor:

Each summer, we have an 8 week, rotating, overnight camp experience in St. Mary's County,  Maryland with orientation week beginning in June and camp ending in August.  Each week, new campers arrive on Monday and leave Friday.  Counselors will receive the bulk of their service hours during this time.  Weekends have limited duties for counselors.  Room & board is provided for the overnight camp counselors.
