Wofford CollegeCAMPUS NAME AND ADDRESS
Wofford College 429 North Church St Spartanburg, SC 29303-3663
CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description) Wofford College is a small liberal arts college located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Wofford was founded in 1854 with a bequest of $100,000 from the Rev. Benjamin Wofford (1780-1850), a Methodist minister and Spartanburg native who sought to create a college for "literary, classical, and scientific education in my native district of Spartanburg." Wofford is one of the few four-year institutions in the southeastern United States founded before the American Civil War and still operating on its original campus. In 1941, Wofford received a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The entire 145-acre campus was designated as an arboretum, and Wofford is a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. The academic year consists of a four month fall semester, a one month January term called the Interim, and a four month spring semester.

MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices) In 2008 -2009, we continued our practice of taking the First Year Bonners to Washington, DC for their First Year Service Trip, to study a social issue of their choosing within the context of national politics and then to meet with our legislators on Capitol Hill to discuss the issue. We are facilitated in this process by the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church (a wonderful resource for any other schools who'd like to adopt this model). Our First Year Service Trip model is strong and it's one of the components of our program from which we believe our students gain the most.
In 2009-2010, we are moving from a disparate, diffuse model of Bonner service (e.g., 60 Bonners possibly serving at as many different sites with little support for or even knowledge of their work from their peers) to an Issue-Based Team model. There are many minds to change about the validity of the new model (most notably, those of the older students and of Community Partners who have grown accustomed to having "their" Bonner who did whatever they most needed) and scheduling enough time for everyone to be together is proving to be difficult, but we are working hard on this new model and are anxious to get it off the ground. If there are other schools in the network making this transition this year, we'd love to learn with you about what's working well and what isn't.
