CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description)

Widener University is a private, metropolitan university located in Chester, Pennsylvania that emphasizes academics and community service. Dynamic teaching, active scholarship, personal attention, and experiential learning are key components of the Widener experience.

At Widener, you'll get the best of both worlds: A large university's wide range of course offerings combined with the intimate class sizes and faculty interaction of a small college. Our 110-acre campus is located just 20 minutes from exciting Center City Philadelphia. The university has three other campuses: two in Pennsylvania (Harrisburg and Exton) and one in Wilmington, Delaware.

About 2,800 undergraduates, 1,700 graduate students, and 1,500 law students attend Widener in eight degree-granting schools. The university offers associate's, baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees in areas ranging from traditional liberal arts to professional programs.

The Carnegie Foundation classifies Widener as a Doctoral/Research University and a Community Engagement Institution.

Widener University has been recognized for its civic engagement efforts with a position on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with distinction.

MORE ABOUT US - Programmatic Highlights from 2008-2090 (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

This year our students participated in a wide range of activities. We continued our work with Habitat for Humanity, Widener Cares, Widener Big Friends, Big Brothers Big Sisters and began working with the opening of the college access center. Each class in the program developed and executed service events/partnerships that benefited the community of Chester.  Our 1st year students established a partnership with the Bernardine Center, a local organization that provides food, clothing, as well as educational programming to those in need. We were able to connect the Bernardine Center with the Community Arts Center and are helping them plan and complete community garden and a mural this summer.  The 2nd year class reached out to local senior centers and put together a night of food, fun, and dancing for elderly people in the community as well as worked with a local nursing home throughout the year. Additionally the 2nd year class reuse and redistribution program at the end of the academic year that benefitted community partners such as the United Way and Salvation Army.  The 3rd year continued their partnership with March of Dimes and started working with a local environmental commission to beautify and improve a park in Chester. The departing 4th year class worked with the Widener Child Development Center.

Undoubtedly, the most exciting service that some of our students completed this year was an international service trip to Jamaica.  A group of 12 students was accompanied by our Bonner Director, Cecilia McCormick; administrative staff member, Michael Bivens; and president of Widener University, Dr. James T. Harris. These students spent months raising money to build two houses and collecting donations for a school and orphanage in Jamaica.
