MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

Of the 67 Counties in Pennsylvania, Greene County, where Waynesburg University is located, is the 2nd poorest County in our Commonwealth.  The need for sustainable solutions to the challenges facing our rural community is sizable.  Due to the rural nature of our community and the economic challenges over the last seven decades, generational welfare continues to exist.  This is where our University partners with our community in addressing the challenges and use these learning opportunities to educate our students outside the classroom by addressing real-life situations.

Unique to Waynesburg University is that service-learning is a General Education requirement that all students must fulfill.  Each student must complete 30 hours of community service while enrolled in a one-credit hour service-learning course.  Reflection papers and discussion are part of the course.  Waynesburg also offers a service leadership minor.  The minor consists of 21-25 credit hours.  Waynesburg also offers a service learning added credit.  This is where a student can add a 1-credit hour service project to an existing 3-credit hour course they are taking.  In addition, Waynesburg University offers a number of week-long mission service trips that are open to all students.  During the 2009-10 academic year, 18 mission service trips were sponsored; 13 domestic and 5 international.  Mission service trips allow students to experience another culture and can be a life-changing experience.  We have a strong partnership with Greene County Habitat for Humanity and have partnered with Greene County Habitat over the last 3 years on a campus-wide service initiative and built two homes within walking distance of campus.  Students, faculty and staff assisted in building the homes.  Service and the importance of being civically engaged and using the gifts that God has blessed you with is woven throughout a Waynesburg University education.
