CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description) The College was founded by Presbyterians in 1894 and maintains a covenant relationship with the Presbyterian Church (USA). This trip was organized by students, including one graduating senior whose thesis focused on alternative break trips as a form of place-based education. One of the most interesting aspects of the Pine Ridge experience was how it relied upon a three-way partnership in order to happen. Students from Warren Wilson worked closely with a tribal elder and medicine man, Floyd Hand, to re-organize and resupply the community's food pantry. Much of this food came from the non-profit organizaton Conscious Alliance, and this agency worked closely with the student organizers to help partially fund the trip and supply necessary logistics. Students also participated in ritualistic ceremonies, ate a very culturally-enhanced diet, and did home visits of many members of the Lakota tribe. One of the final projects for the group involved reroofing the home of an elderly tribal member. In order to make the experience come "full circle", the students and staff leaders of the trip organized a campus visit for Floyd Hand, so that he could see firsthand some of the College's sustainability and greening initiatives. The visit was a huge success, and the numbers that turned out to listen to the Lakota leader were very high. The relationship between the Pine Ridge reservation and Warren Wilson will undoubtedly continue to grow, especially with Floyd Hand's interest in the College. He foresaw Lakota youth eventually attending the College, making the most of its work program and sustainability practices. Currently, a Warren Wilson faculty member is planning to return to the reservation in Spring 2009, integrating the trip into her Cultural Psychology class.
