Welcome to Ursinus College!

Ursinus College is a small liberal arts college located in Collegeville, PA. Our mission is to

enable students to become independent, responsible, and thoughtful individuals through a program of

liberal education.  An Ursinus College education prepares students to live creatively and usefully,

and to provide leadership for their society in an interdependent world. In order to provide this for

our students, Ursinus has developed a strong foundation of civic engagement. This civic

engagement is found in many classes, clubs, and teams, but it is centralized through our

campus-wide service office, known as UCARE (Ursinus Center for Advocacy, Responsibility, and

Engagement). The UCARE office, along with additional student affairs at Ursinus College, is

dedicated in helping students live lives of authenticity and integrity while simultaneously being an

engaged citizens. The UCARE office primarily consists of the Ursinus Bonner Leaders and Ursinus

Service Fellows who are committed to continuously inspire, empower, and promote a strong sense

of civic engagement and service across the Ursinus College campus. If you are interested in learning

more about service at Ursinus College, want to apply to be a Bonner Leader or Service Fellow, or

have any additional questions at all please contact Elizabeth Cannon at ecannon@ursinus.edu or for

further information visit Ursinus's website (http://www.ursinus.edu) or UCARE's website.

UCARE (Ursinus' Center for Advocacy, Responsibility and Engagement)

UCARE‘s success with its inaugural year demonstrates the desires and ambition of Ursinus students to get involved with service and civic engagement in hopes to immerse themselves in social and civic enterprise as a feature of their higher education. The student-initiated and student-led initiatives, under the auspices of UCARE, confirm the importance of civic engagement and provide a paradigm for students to fulfill their educational and personal goals. UCARE’s website - www.ursinus.edu/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=2176 – and weekly newsletter’s are constantly updated and disseminated to the campus to display the new progress and activities that constantly transform civic engagement at Ursinus.

Scores of our students were involved last year in service and civic engagement opportunities, many of which ran as weekly volunteer opportunities.  We have every reason to expect that this year an even greater number of students will recognize civic engagement as a vehicle for them to develop and pursue their passion and opportunity to serve the greater community.

Civic Engagement
UCARE and Bonner have committed to launching a more concerted effort in expanding the community based learning as part of Ursinus’ liberal arts curricular architecture. Dr. Rice hosted a Faculty Salon this past year that encouraged faculty members to better incorporate academic civic engagement and community-based learning into their syllabi to enrich the learning that goes on in the classroom across disciplines. Furthermore, Dr. Rice is heading an exploration of the development of a Civic Engagement minor as part of Ursinus’ curriculum. Because of UCARE’s commitment to civic engagement and its importance in the liberal arts education, this coming fall, Dr. Rice is facilitating a team-taught course (Introduction to Social Justice Studies) which will introduce students to the departments on campus that explore issues of inequality.
