CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description)

Carolina’s vibrant people and programs attest to the University’s long-standing place among leaders in higher education since it was chartered in 1789 and opened its doors for students in 1795 as the nation’s first public university. Situated in the beautiful college town of Chapel Hill, N.C., UNC has earned a reputation as one of the best universities in the world. Carolina prides itself on a strong, diverse student body, academic opportunities not found anywhere else, a strong commitment to public service, and a value unmatched by any public university in the nation.

KEY FACTS

Location: Chapel Hill is located in the north-central Piedmont section of North Carolina, approximately midmidway between Washington, DC, and Atlanta, GA.  It comprises one of the 3 legs of the Research Triangle, the others being neighboring Durham and Raleigh NC.

Enrollment: In the fall of 2011, Carolina enrolled 18,579 undergraduates. Total enrollment is currently 29,137.

Other interesting tidbits: UNC-Chapel Hill was the nation's first state university to open its doors and the only public university to award degrees in the 18th century.  Authorized by the NC Constitution in 1776, the University was chartered by the NC General Assembly in 1789, the same year George Washington first was inaugurated as president.
