CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description)

Instructional programs at the undergraduate level transmit knowledge and skills to students. At the graduate level, students experience with their instructors the processes of developing and testing new hypotheses and fresh interpretations of knowledge. Education for professional careers, grounded in understanding of relevant sciences, literature and research methods, provides individuals with the tools to continue intellectual development over a lifetime and to contribute to the needs of a changing society.

MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

In 2008-09 our 40 Bonner Leaders worked directly at more than 40 service sites, and supported partnerships with another 180-200 service sites.  Program highlights from the past year include:

I. For the second year, incorporating a Healthy Communities Project into the Bonner Program.  Returning Bonner Leaders made up our Student Leadership Team and besides planning and leading our Mid-year Retreat in January, advised first-year Bonners on completion of this capstone social action project as part of their training and development.

II. Developing our Oakland Community Builders internship program, coordinated by two Bonner Leaders, that places students with grassroots community organizations while helping these student learn teh theory behind community organizing.

III. Placing 20 Bonner Leaders at nonprofits and school sites to serve as volunteer managers, whose role is to recruit and lead reflection for other Cal students.  Cal Corps staff led a training for the 20 site supervisors in August.

IV. Year three of community-based research (CBR) initiative incorporating CBR projects into Cal in Local Government Internship Program placements.

 V. Developing a local Community Advisory Committee to provide input into Bonner programming and assist the Center with site selection, student training, and measuring our impact on the community.

VI. Cal Corps continued its 10-year commitment to rebuilding the Gulf Coast by:

1)      Transitioning the Bonner Leader Gulf Coast Organizer position to 2 Magnolia Project Student Director positions;

2)      Continuing with a Community Advisory Board in New Orleans and placing 7 interns with 5 member organizations in summer 2009;

3)      Supporting a fourth Alternative Break to New Orleans, coordinated by 2 Bonners;

4)      Supporting the third year of Magnolia Project, which brought 45 student volunteers to New Orleans for 3 weeks of service in summer 2009; and

5)      Moving forward with our plans for a semester-long exchange program with The University of New Orleans that includes 20 hour/week community based research internships.  This includes our past Senior Bonner, Alice Chamberlain, recruiting 10 faculty members to serve as field studies advisers to potential Cal interns.
