CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description)

Union College is the first college to be established in the mountains of Kentucky.  Located in the southeastern part of the state, Union was founded in 1879 in the city of Barbourville.

Union College identifies four components of a learning community necessary to effect personal, intellectual, and social, transformation – knowledge, wisdom, service, and spiritual growth. As a private, academically rigorous, liberal arts college of the United Methodist Church, we believe that spiritual growth is not only essential, it is also integrally related to the other components of the transformation process. Based on the Wesleyan vision that education is a union of “knowledge and vital piety,” the College provides students an academic program and co-curricular activities that nurture a strong and active faith and lead them to see how a historically grounded religion is viable in contemporary cultures both at home and around the world. The College sees a special connection between service and spiritual growth; redemption is a social as well as an inner, personal experience.

MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

Union's Bonner Program is going back to the basics.  We have really taken a look at what it means to reach out to the community.   Along with yet another new Coordinator, came a new and exciting energy.   We have taken the past year to really dig deep into the challenges and we are now starting to sort through them.   The past year was full of numerous awareness days, fabulous trips and bonding experiences.

Special Events

Throughout the entire year, the program coordinated a number of awareness days.  The entire month of November we focused on Hunger Relief.   We invited the campus and Community members to participate in a Hunger Banquet which was led by a Bonner Scholar alum, Travis Carmack.   In February, we joined efforts with the Spiritual Life team and Campus Activities Board, to but on a Haiti Relief Fundraiser.   Hoopin' 4 Haiti was a great success and the school raised over $1,400 to go toward the town of Fondwa, Haiti.   We also collected health supplies that were shipped to Louisiana to be taken by the United Methodist Church to Haiti.   April was a very busy month.  On April 8th, Union joined thousands of people all over the world in "One Day Without Shoes.  In spite of goose droppings, torrential rain and cold temperatures, Union Administration, Faculty, Staff, Students and even Trustees, bared their soles.   This event urged people everywhere to go one day without shoes to experience what children and adults in many poverty stricken countries endure every day.  Union Bonners also collected shoes that were donated to the local schools and distributed in Brazil.   At the End of April, the Bonner program led an Earth Day Celebration.   From hosting an Earth Day Fair, to planting a native Redbud tree on campus with the Mayor of Barbourville, to putting on an Earth Day Concert featuring two of Union's talented Faculty members.   The Bonner Recycling Team spread the word about the many environmental issues, along with promoting the recycling program on campus and in the City of Barbourville.

Visions for the Future

This year the program reinstated the Sophomore Re-commitment, which had been dormant for a number of years.   During a number of class meetings, sophomore members were asked to evaluate the program since they started.   They made a "Wish List" along with an "Improvement List".   They were also asked to create a Vision Board, which allowed them to come up with a vision for the next two years and then present that to the entire group.  Below are just a few of the the visions.

Becoming Warriors

This year, Senior Capstones had a face lift.  For the senior class, their last semester was full of questioning who they had become and where they will go after the Bonner Career.   They were required to read the book Way of the Peaceful Warrior and at each class meeting, took some time to reflect on different aspects of the book and how they could apply it too their lives.   They were also required to complete a Warrior Packet, which included an autobiography following the 5 E's, a Volunteer Inventory, a Vision Board for their future, and their Presentation of Learning which focused on one of the Common Commitments.  Below are some of their Visions.

Would you all be interested in forming a Kentucky Council of Bonner Schools (KY COBS)?
