Union College
CAMPUS NAME AND ADDRESS Union College 310 College Street Box 5 Barbourville, KY 40906-1499
CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description)
Union College is the first college to be established in the mountains of Kentucky. Located in the southeastern part of the state, Union was founded in 1879 in the city of Barbourville.
Union College identifies four components of a learning community necessary to effect personal, intellectual, and social, transformation – knowledge, wisdom, service, and spiritual growth. As a private, academically rigorous, liberal arts college of the United Methodist Church, we believe that spiritual growth is not only essential, it is also integrally related to the other components of the transformation process. Based on the Wesleyan vision that education is a union of “knowledge and vital piety,” the College provides students an academic program and co-curricular activities that nurture a strong and active faith and lead them to see how a historically grounded religion is viable in contemporary cultures both at home and around the world. The College sees a special connection between service and spiritual growth; redemption is a social as well as an inner, personal experience.

MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices) 2007-2008 was a year of transition for the UC Bonners. Though it has been a change in leadership, UC Bonners have never been more focused and hungry for a change within their community. It is one of their deepest desires to see the change that is taking place by their words, their hands and feet and their hearts to become a culture and a movement! In cultivating this movement, the UC Bonners plus 110 more students, faculty and staff were hard at work at the 11th Annual Repair Affair event, where they repaired 11 houses throughout Knox County. Led by our Junior class, the event was quite a success and they are in hope of continuing the tradition in the 12 year by repairing 12 new homes in Knox County. The UC Bonners were also on the move this Spring Break to New Orleans as we partners with Operation Nehemiah in Saint Bernard's Parish to bring more change to their community. We were able to help demolish a Nursing home in the lower Ninth Ward that was swalled up by Katrina as well as plant over 100 trees for a recovering neighborhood. Several new programs were initiated this year including: a campus-wide Hunger Banquet, a Monthly Swim and Field Day for Special Needs Children, the One Campaign and Films for Change. There is an increasing interest among our students on Global Issues, Social Justice and Public Policy. Out of these concerns came a student-led Community Based Research Team which is currently working with the Health Department in our community to eventually provide septic tanks and clean drinking water for low-income impoverished families. As summer is coming to an end, we are getting more and more excited for our new freshman class to roll on in and begin a week long orientation before Welcome Week begins. We plan to take our All-Bonners retreat to a new location, Maryville College's Low Ropes course and camping in Cades Cove!

Would you all be interested in forming a Kentucky Council of Bonner Schools (KY COBS)?
