Stetson University Congress Proposal

Stetson University

Junior/Freshman Initiative

Background

Stetson University is an private, co-educational, liberal arts university located in DeLand, Florida, USA. Founded in 1883, it is the oldest private institution of higher education in the state of Florida.

Big Idea

In transition from sophomore to junior year, the Bonners become apathetic and we want them to rediscover the meaning of servant leadership. Historically, students lack consistency, motivation and dedication. From year to year, they tend to switch CLA's; therefore, it is rare that they develop a leadership role within their service site. There is a tendency to log non CLA hours in place of CLA hours due to confusion surrounding what defines a CLA. It weakens the foundation of the five E's in that it prevents the development of the leaderships skills that potentially develop into the skills of an expert in the field of community and civic engagement.

Plan of Action

In this section please list the students, staff, faculty, or community partners your big idea involves. Also please describe how the implementation of your big idea will be assisted by your congress experience. Conclusion

The best way to learn something is to teach someone else.

There are flaws and holes we hope to fill via network opportunities presented to us while at congress.

Update - Report to Share in the 20th Anniversary Congress Booklet

We intend to create a beautifully designed book to be distributed at the 20th Anniversary Summer Leadership Institute that shares with the entire Bonner Network the work of Congress Representatives in 2009-2010 on their big ideas. Please write your report in the format below. For an example, click on this page:  http://bonnernetwork.pbworks.com/Big-Idea-Summaries

1) Title (of your project/big idea - feel free to update from the fall).

Leadership Represented

2) The Case

As the Bonner Program developed at Stetson University, the meaning of servant leadership diminished in transition from sophomore to junior year. Because they switch their CLA's from year to year, their motivation was divided and the relationship with the community partners did not exist. There was a tendency to log non CLA hours in place of CLA hours due to confusion surrounding what defines a CLA. It weakens the foundation of the five E's in that it prevents the development of the leaderships skills that potentially develop into the skills of an expert in the field of community and civic engagement.

3) The Solution:

The junior class reflected on their current service work and community partners by preparing a presentation for freshman and sophomore Bonners at a class-based meeting. The presentation consisted of how they started, what they do and they discussed their leadership role or how they plan to develop one. Their reflections were efforts to define leadership in this particular class.

4) The Process:

By presenting their CLA's, the junior Bonners share their experiences with the rest of the Bonners. This is in efforts to enlighten the other Bonners with personal stories and share their journey in efforts to avoid re-occurrences of our identified issue. These reflections took place towards the end of the school year. The juniors were asked to create a PowerPoint or speech that highlights particular aspects of their service site in which they share their challenges and/or inspired moments. These presentations are similar to that of our senior capstones but consists but is specifically more on their leadership role. The goal is to help freshman and sophomore Bonners avoid switching their CLA's after the one-semester period.
