MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)
FALL 2008 (Co-curricular event)
In the fall of 2008, CILSA sponsored and hosted an OXFAM “hunger banquet” as part of the First Year Experience (FYE) theme of Feast or Famine. CILSA Bonner Leader, EJ Youngblood, used materials and information from OXFAM to create the event. Nearly 200 students attended the event and were randomly assigned to one of three groups based on world demographics. Only 15% of the students were at the First World table, served a full course meal on linen tablecloths. Another group ate rice and beans at a communal table. The last group, representing the third world, was seated on the floor after standing in line to receive a bowl of rice. Participants also received a “personal biography” printed on a card describing the quality of life experience of people from all over the world. The event included guest speakers, a slide show, and reflection discussions on the issues of hunger. Attendees donated money that went directly to Oxfam America and food to the Contra Costa and Solano County Food Bank. Campus Issue Profile: Hunger & Homelessness SPRING 2009 (Co-curricular event)
Carnival 4 Kids promotes higher education to children, fosters relationships amongst children and college students, provides a fun carnival for the children, and encourages a meaningful service experience for SMC students. Created by 2 students in 2002, a core team of 15 student leaders plan the event, recruit student volunteers, and connect with community partner organizations such as: Saint Martin de Porres Elementary, Cambridge Elementary School, Meadow Homes Elementary School, and HeadStart Preschools. The 7th annual Carnival 4 Kids was theme 'Make a Splash' and brought nearly 200 young children from underserved schools to the Saint Mary's College campus. Upon arrival, each child was paired with a SMC "Big Buddy" who spent the afternoon guiding them through the 40 booths and games created by SMC residence halls, clubs, departments, and athletic teams. Approximately 300 Saint Mary's students contributed their time and talents into making this event a resounding success.
RECOGNITION (Community Engagement)
In 2008-2009, approximately 40% of the student body engaged in service, and of those students, over 50% made at least a semester-long commitment. Also in 2008-2009, 25% of SMC Federal Work Study Funds went to students who were engaged in community service.
CILSA achieved national recognition on behalf of Saint Mary’s College this year. First, Saint Mary’s was named to the The Carnegie Foundation program, Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, which honors leading schools in the service learning field. Saint Mary’s sought and received the competitive Community Engagement Classification Award in December, 2008. From across the United States, 119 colleges and universities were recognized, following a rigorous selection criteria. The foundation created its 2008 community engagement classification of schools based on applications and documentation substantiating the extent of an institution’s community engagement at local, regional, national or international levels. Curricular Engagement includes institutions where teaching, learning and scholarship engage faculty, students, and community in mutually beneficial and respectful collaboration. Their interactions address community-identified needs, deepen students’ civic and academic learning, enhance community well-being, and enrich the scholarship of the institution.
Saint Mary’s College was also included on The Honor Roll's Presidential Award, given each year to only a handful of institutions, is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.

SPRING 2009 INITIATIVES Serve 2.0
Her impression of this project was that it was optional-us looking for volunteers to be a part of it. Don't have staff capacity at the moment. Will look at incorporating students to take the lead on utilizing these tools. Just had an inauguration event-500 people came

*Have one student for the spring, one student who is exiting early due to financial constraints. Federal work study was cut by 40%. Sent a packet to us today-the last of all the Fall paperwork. Will be more timely this spring. Concerned about slots-being sure that we can provide them to students they have recruited Within the month, will make choices about the size of the program next year. August 25th start date?

1/28 discussion with Mike Bishop about the event: The West Coast Bonner Event will take place this Saturday, the 31st. It is a one day event tagged onto the Leadership Symposium that Calcorps started 6 years ago. Now one of their sister campuses leads it. They are incorporating this event into that symposium. The symposium is also the same day (one day event).
Time: 9am to 4pm at UC Berkeley, The Center for Student Leadership.
It is a student planned symposium. They invited Wayne to speak last year and mentioned it to him at the Director's meeting for this year.
