MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

The Community Values Statements of Rider University states that "true leadership is derived from service to others".  This statement is the basis for the work that takes place in the Office of Community Service and Service-Learning.  Rider Community Scholars/ Bonner Leaders are campus-wide agents of change at Rider.  They participate in various activies and events throughout the year, in addition to their regular 10 hours a week at their site placement, such as:

Midnight Run - Bonners prepare bagged meals and donations each month for this effort.  Each month different student organizations take turns going on the Run itself.  Bonners travel into NYC each December to distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City. The late-night relief efforts create a forum for trust, sharing, understanding and affection. That human exchange, rather than the exchange of goods, is the essence of the Midnight Run mission.

Lawrenceville Main Street Park Clean Ups - Bonner clean up a local park for the community in the Fall and Spring semester.

"Because We Care, We Share" Girl Scouts program -  Bonners run two workshop (one in the fall and one in the spring) where they teach young Girls Scouts about hunger and homelessness and then teach them how to make fleece blankets which are donated to a local shelter or Midnight Run.

Feed the Hungry - students, faculty and staff serve a pre-Thanksgiving meal to over 400 Trenton area homeless.

Thanksgiving Basket collection - Bonners assist in collecting and sorting over 250 thanksgiving basket donations which are then distributed to low-income families in the area.

MLK Days of Service - students participate and lead their peers at various non-profit organizations to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through service projects such as working in a "Free Store" to painting and much more.

Habitat for Humanity - Bonners volunteer for this organization at least once a year helping to build a new home for a low-income family in the area.

International Service-Learning Trips - students have the opportunity to do service abroad in Jamaica, Domincan Republic or Belize completing volunteer work such as teaching in an orphanage, repairing a water filtration system and other repairs or building a hurricane-proof playground and teaching math, English and hygiene, respectively.

First Year Service Trip - Bonner students who just completed their first year in the program go into Philadelphia to do a community rehabilitation project over three days in August.

Second Year Exchange - Bonners students who just completed their second year in the program attend the All Bonner Service track of the Summer Leadership Institute.  They get to pick which project the will attend based on their interest.  This year, we had students build toys for low-income children; help a refugee family learn how to use American cleaning products in their home; build a wheelchair ramp for a disabled woman to get in and out of her home; and, play games and visit with senior citizens living in a nursing home.

Disater Preparedness Go-Bags

Currently, AmeriCorps is embarking on a project that will support the State’s emergency preparedness initiatives, as well as provide disabilities awareness training and network building to AmeriCorps programs for recruitment and retention of persons with disabilities.  During AmeriCorps Week which runs from May 11, 2009 through May 17, 2009 AmeriCorps members will prepare and distribute 800-1000 Disaster Preparedness “Go Bags” specific to the disabled community.  These bags will be filled with life saving items that can be used in the event of a disaster.

Although the project is receiving funding for the purchase of the actual bags, the overall project cost is much greater than the funds allotted for the bags.  In order to complete this project AmeriCorps is actively seeking donations for the following items to be placed in the Go Bags:

·              Power/ Protein Bars

·              Re-usable water bottles

Please drop off all donations in front of BLC room 123
