Weekly Update — November 6, 2009
[1] I-40 Traffic Advisory: Plan for Detour to Asheville [2] Fall Directors Program [3] AmeriCorps Reminder: Campus Site Agreement [4] Featured Bonner: Tia Malcom, DePauw University
************ [1] I-40 Traffic Advisory: Plan for Detour to Asheville
The Asheville area and the mountains of Western North Carolina remain accessible from the east, south and north after a rock slide along Interstate 40 at the North Carolina/Tennessee border. Travelers heading to Asheville from the west may use the following detour options (as of 10/25/09): Detour Routes to Asheville
Detour 1: Express Route via Scenic Interstate BywayThe NC Department of Transportation advises I-40 travelers from the west to take I-81 north to Johnson City, then I-26 East to Asheville. The I-26 route adds roughly 50 minutes to the travel time, and is one of the nation’s only interstate Scenic Byways. I-26 takes motorists through the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains offering scenic observation points, a welcome center and stunning views of the highest peaks in the East.
Detour 2: Dixie HighwayTravelers coming from the west on I-40 may also take exit 432-B for US-25 South/US-70 East toward Newport. After Newport, TN, 25/70 becomes the Dixie Highway. Follow signs to stay on 25/70. Shortly after entering North Carolina, you will pass through the town of Hot Springs. Continue until you reach I-26. Take I-26 East to get to Asheville. This route adds roughly 30 minutes to the travel time and is a beautiful scenic mountain highway. Passenger vehicles only are permitted on this road–it is not a commercial travel route (i.e. motorcoach, RVs or dual-axel vehicles). Please consider possible weather and traffi c congestion issues on this winding two-lane road.

[1] Fall Directors Meeting a Success [2] AmeriCorps Reminders: Training and Enrichment hours [3] BWBRS Reminders: Duplicate entries and pre-dated signature dates [4] New Enrollment Books Now Available [5] Bonner Social Media Updates
************ [1] Fall Directors Meeting a Success
Many thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Fall Directors Meeting. To those who couldn’t come, we wish you could have been in on the invigorating conversations, inspiring idea-swapping, and indescribable karaoke that took place over the course of the past four days.
Please help us keep the momentum of that meeting going by continuing to stay involved in the fine-tuning of the ideas you came up with for moving forward into this new year of the program and for celebrating Bonner’s 20th Anniversary this coming year. The meeting got us off to a great start – let’s keep going!
************ [2] AmeriCorps Reminder: Training and Enrichment hours
Please remember that AmeriCorps members can only log 20% of their total hours in Training and Enrichment activities. This means that members with 300 hour terms can only count a total of 60 T&E hours toward their total AmeriCorps hours; 450 hour members can receive credit for up to 90 T&E hours; and 900 hour members can count as many as 120 T&E hours. Please keep in mind that T&E hours beyond 20% of the term will not be counted toward the member's total hours.
************ [3] BWBRs Reminder: Duplicate Entries
None of you enjoys having to ask a student to resubmit hour logs due to easily avoidable mistakes; we feel you. That’s what why we’re asking you to keep an eye out for two things that seem to be cropping up with disturbing tenacity: DUPLICATE ENTRIES and SIGNATURE DATES that PRE-DATE the print date of the hour log. If you’re working to catch these pesky destroyers of everyone’s sanity on your end, we won’t have to bother you with them from ours. Together, we can conquer this temporary reign of terror.
************ [4] New Enrollment Books Now Available
The green (2009-2010) enrollment books are here at last! If you would like us to send some your way, or if you anticipate needing some in the near future for an orientation event or the like, email Janet Ashwood at jashwood@bonner.org with your request.
Please remember that on page five, you don't need to fill out anything excpet the student's social security number. Please do not sign and date the page as the certifying official and do not let your students do so either.
************ [5] Bonner Social Media Updates
Updated website home page
Our Bonner Foundation website got a makeover, and a pretty good one if I do say so myself. Thanks to Bobby’s mad skills, www.bonner.org has a much sleeker look and is (we think) much easier to navigate. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think.
Tweet, tweet, tweet.
Twitter. You may hate it, but you can’t ignore it. And now that the Bonner Foundation has a twitter account, you may change your opinion of it (from bad to good we hope!). Find us by going to http://twitter.com/ and searching for bonnernetwork. You’ll find everything from meeting announcements to notifications of new resources from both within and outside our network. Check it out. You never know; you might really like it. Besides, some of us are just downright hilarious and fun to follow no matter what the subject matter.
