2009 ANNUAL REPORT OF PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

Please add narrative text that responds to the questions in the four categories below.

Implementation of Student Development

What was the structure and content for the implementation of the developmental model this year?

As the first year of Bonner at Montclair State University, 2008-09 was a year of development for all involved with the Bonner program!

Throughout the Fall semester there were weekly training meetings.  Early in the semester students received training on setting goals and objectives.  Training throughout the year was driven by the development of the program, so focused predominantly on programming and leadership skills.  We did not participate in the Serve 2.0 initiative, though we look forward to growth and participation in '09-'10.

The Bonner students served in a mentoring and leadership role with the Emerging Leaders Learning Community (ELLC) group of over 90 incoming Freshman students.  Bonners also served as team leaders at the fall ELLC retreat, led service projects related to the ELLC service-learning course in the Psychology of Leadership.

Implementation of Community Partnerships

Please share a summary of your work with community partners, highlighting your work regarding  (no more than one page text needed):

Bonner Leaders served with two current Community Partners:

SCEEP, Suburban Cultural Education Enrichment Program, volunteers create a mentor/mentee relationship to help improve the children's grades in school. Bonner members serve as coordinators of this program, planning each week's activity (which in the past has included speakers, art projects, math competitions, spelling bees, etc.) Bonners also help the mentor/mentee relationships develop, help maintain continuous attendance and always make sure that each student receives the attention they may need.

This program was co-led in the Fall by Ashley Cornelison and a non-Bonner student;  in the Spring, Ashley Cornelison and Chantal Martinez were the student leaders for this partnership.

Side Door, mentoring at-risk students in an after school program.

Throughout the year Nicholas Jones served with Side Door.

Campus-Wide Culture and Infrastructure

Please describe key activities and structures related to the development of campus-wide infrastructure and the role of the Bonner Program in enhancing (or being enhanced by) campus-wide culture and participation in service.  In particular, share  (no more than one page text needed):

On Campus Service Support:

HRLDA - Human Relations Leadership Development Association (HRLDA) is a Montclair State student organization with a strong mission toward community service.  Throughout the year, Frank Quinones coordinated and supervised a variety of community service projects ranging from service at a food bank, to mentoring students, to providing holiday gifts for at risk children and their families.  The other Bonner students also participated in some HRLDA  service events.

Civic Engagement on campus:

Beginning in January of this year, the Bonner students opened a community service resource room located in the Center for Student Involvement.  The students call this room the Bonner S.P.O.T.S. ~ service providers on the spot. The intention of this office is to provide a location for individuals and organizations to drop in and request information about volunteer opportunities.  The students created an interest form for individuals to indicate their areas of service interest, availability (single volunteer or ongoing volunteering) and contact information.  The Bonners then compiled a list of relevant opportunities and supplied this to the individual.  In addition, the Bonners assisted in reinstating the campus Community Service Advisory Board (CSAB) to meet regularly with representatives from organizations who engage in community service.  The intention is to connect organizations with service opportunities and assist organizations in maximizing capacity through partnerships.  The efforts of this office support the staff of the Center for Student Involvement as well as supporting the campus community and beyond.

Serve 2.0

Please highlight your key activities related to the integration of web-based tools as they are connected to the design, management, and outreach for service.  In particular, share  (no more than one page text needed):

  • Your integration with other social media tools (such as the Bonner Network Forum/Ning, Twitter, YouTube, the Bonner Video Project, PolicyOptions Wiki, or others)

We look forward to expanding into the world of Serve 2.0 in the upcoming academic year!
