MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

Democracy House at Middlesex County colleges partners with organizations throughout the Edison, Perth Amboy and New Brunswick areas to provide them with service work from our Bonners. Our Partners include: Elijah's Promise Soup Kitchen, PRAB, 21st Century, Rartian River organizations, and many more.

This past academic year at Democracy House, our corps members delved into a wide variety of service, trainings and campus wide inititaves that helped to strengthem them individually, as well as the program itself. In April, we hosted a Holocaust Speakers Forum, entitled, "The Holocaust and Israel" in which Tova  Friedman, a well known survivor told the story of her time leading up to Auschwitz as well as her time there and final transition to Israel. Following her was Daniel Rosenfeld, a former member of Democracy House who participated in March of the Living through the Birth Right program which sends young Jewish people to Israel and Poland and/or Germany who have not been there before. His portion on the program focused on his experiences and how the linkage of the Holocaust to Israel today is of much signifigance. The basis of the program was to help students and adults gain knowledge of the horrible events that took place in Europe, Israel's state today and how we can create and maintain peace in the world through looking at these events and situations.

Also in April, Democracy House hosted a river clean up along the raritan river in which students from Middlesex County College, our program, Rider, The College of New Jersey and others who wanted to help extracted garbage and other items from a section of the river which flows through Middlesex County. Before the actual cleanup, we hosted workshops in which students learned about their impact on the environment and how we can make a difference in the earth's state.

Overall, this past year was a great one for Democracy House in which many students took leadership roles as Bonners. Many students came up with ideas for fundraisers and participated in them. Others showed amazing willingness to serve their community through our work with our community partners. Through service, events and training, 2007-2008 was an amazing year.
