[3] New Jersey Hunger Report

On Feb 3rd, the NJ Federation of Food Banks presented the most recent information regarding the hunger situation in NJ. The data presented was drawn from the national study, Hunger in America 2010, conducted in 2009 for Feeding America (FA), the nation’s largest organization of emergency food providers. The study was based on completed in-person interviews with more than 62,000 clients served by the FA national network, as well as on completed questionnaires from more than 37,000 FA agencies. This was the first time information regarding the current condition of hunger and food insecurity in NJ will be revealed. Click here to see the full New Jersey State Report.

Edward and August Wuillermin, owners of Ed Wuillermin and Sons Inc., Hammonton, N.J., have been honored with the Neil Robson Farmers Against Hunger award. The company donated 50,000 pounds of fresh produce in 2009 to food banks in New Jersey, said Lynne Richmond, public information officer for the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. Read the full story here.

[5] Food Stamps Are History

On January 21, 2010, USDA presented samples of Food Stamp Program coupons and other materials to the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.  The donation highlights significant changes in the program over nearly 40 years, from paper coupons to today’s debit cards used in electronic benefit transfer (EBT) programs.
While billions of food coupons have been distributed by the USDA since the beginning of the program, only a small sample has survived, due to the practice of the coupons being destroyed at a Federal Reserve Bank once redeemed by grocers.  By law, food stamp coupons were de-obligated on June 17, 2009 and are no longer legal tender. Read more.

[6] USDA Secretary Vilsack Addresses Childhood Nutrition
On February 23rd, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack spoke at a National Press Club luncheon to highlight the Obama Administration's priorities for the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act and to advocate for the rapid passage of a strong reauthorization bill to improve the health and nutrition of our nation's children.
Of particular importance are his remarks about school feeding programs and child nutrition: ""What is the cost of hunger to America's children that drives us to call for its end by 2015? The answer is simple. Ask any teacher how students who fail to eat a healthy breakfast or lunch perform in class. Hungry kids don't learn as well. In fact, the damage extends beyond the hungry children. If those children are not able to perform to their fullest potential, they will not be able to challenge the other students to extend themselves. If we want and need our children fully prepared for a competitive world and global economy we cannot afford for them to be hungry." Read the full statement here.
