[2] Bonner AmeriCorps Updates
Some of you might have received a message recently posted on the Higher Ed List Serve regarding the launch of the Corporation for National and Community Service’s My AmeriCorps Portal. Please do not be concerned. Your members will continue to use BWBRS and our staff will take responsibility for ensuring that all member information is inputted into the My AmeriCorps Portal. Therefore, this change will not affect the Bonner AmeriCorps Enrollment Process. Members will continue to access the education award through the portal.
Our Bonner AmeriCorps team will begin nationally reviewing your service positions, CLAs, and T&E events for Summer 2009, beginning July 1. Please make sure your BWBRS information is up-to-date!
As always, don't hesitate to contact anyone on our Bonner AmeriCorps team with your questions/concerns: Janet Ashwood, Miriam Barnes, Christen Foell, Rebecca Grinstead, Gretchen Mielke and Annie Pasqua.

[3] FAFSA in the News
Have you read about the planned changes to SIMPLIFY the FAFSA? The Education Secretary, Arne Duncan, presented at The White House this week.
FAFSA, the Perfect, and the Good
"[Arne Duncan] was talking about how big a deterrent the federal form was to getting students from low-income families to apply to college, when Duncan, as superintendent of Chicago's public schools throughout this decade, was trying to increase the district's college-going rates. In part because of the FAFSA's multiple pages and scores of questions seeking personal and financial information about students and their families, many policy experts believe, hundreds of thousands of potential recipients forgo many millions of dollars of federal college aid each year.
That, plain and simple, is the reason why so many higher education analysts -- and both of the last two presidential administrations -- have made "simplification" of the financial aid form a major priority. (It's also something that can be done without a huge financial cost, something that can't be said about too many things in this town these days.) The Obama administration has put increasing Americans' rate of college going near the top of its agenda for economic recovery and progress, and that political imperative is creating movement on the idea of simplifying the financial aid process where it has been hard to come by previously." ***********

[5] Annual Reports Reminder
Don't forget that Annual Reports are due Friday, July 10!
The 2008-2009 Annual Report Guidelines provide campuses with an opportunity to share their work this past year, especially in ways that reflect key initiatives. We’ve continued to weave these guidelines around the Self-Assessment Tool and integrating the Serve 2.0 initiative. We also continue the use of the Bonner Network Wiki so that aspects of your Report may be shared across campuses, spreading the word about good work that has been accomplished this year. Hence, there are two parts of the Annual Report as follows:
Part 1: Wiki-Based Program Report Part 2: Letter & Related Survey Questions • Self-Assessment Review and Analysis • Reporting & Accountability Report In summary, your Report can be eight pages or less. Part 1 is the public portion of your annual report and will be submitted on the Bonner Network Wiki using a new page linked to from your campus profile page. Part 2 is the private portion of your annual report which we ask that you complete and mail to the Foundation. It should consist of a cover letter responding to the self-assessment review and analysis, as well as responses to the Reporting and Accountability questions in this document. Please find the complete guidelines attached.

[] SLI follow-up with Global Issues/Diversity and the Pulitzer Center
*from Janeen Heath @ the Pulitzer Center*
Hello Bonner Administrators:
It was great connecting with you at SLI last week on the topics of international perspective and global awareness. I enjoyed hearing about all the amazing work you're doing with your programs locally.
I wanted to pass along a bit more information about the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and the opportunities available for Bonners to enhance their knowledge and others' around them of the pressing, under-reported international issues of today while building upon their personal, professional and leadership skills.
Whether it's through viewing and discussing a Pulitzer media clip each week or month during the all-Bonner meetings, hosting a Pulitzer journalist for on-campus engagement, or appointing a Pulitzer Bonner Liaison on your campus, the possibilities for engagement are flexible and accommodating of a broad range of majors and interest areas.
We'll sign you up to receive the Pulitzer Center's weekly newsletter, which is the best way to stay informed of all the Center's reporting, resources, activity, and engagement activities! Please let me know as soon as possible if you would prefer NOT to be signed up to receive our newsletter. The next newsletter will be sent this Friday, announcing the launch of a couple new reporting projects in Kenya (Kakuma Refugee Camp, home to the famous "Lost Boys of Sudan") and Guinea Bissau (an alarming inside look at the instability and narcotrafficking plaguing the country).
Please see the attached PDF for a description of the Pulitzer Bonner Campus Liaison position along with examples of outreach activities created and implemented on campus and in the local community by current and former Pulitzer Liaisons. We'll work with students to lay out a semester or year-long plan of outreach activities that allow them to work in the areas they find most exciting. Concentration tracks are available in Global Issues, Journalism, Event Planning, Curriculum Integration, Marketing/PR, Event Planning, Social Media, or Create Your Own Track.
The application process is fairly simple: a cover letter, a resume and a phone interview. Please see the attached document for the specifics of what students should include in their cover letters. We appoint Liaisons on a rolling basis; however, if looking to begin as Liaison this Fall 2009, we encourage submitting applications as soon as possible. To gain a better understanding of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, we invite you to browse through our website (www.pulitzercenter.org) as well as our interactive, educational Pulitzer Gateway portals (www.pulitzergateway.org). In short, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is an innovative non-profit leader in supporting the independent international journalism that U.S. media organizations are increasingly less willing to undertake. The Center focuses on under-reported topics, promoting high-quality international reporting and creating platforms that reach broad and diverse audiences.
Please feel free to contact myself with any questions or Joy Kazadi (jkazadi@pulitzercenter.org), our summer intern and Bonner Scholar at Emory & Henry.
And finally, if you know of a Bonner in DC this summer, please put them in touch with us as we're hoping to plan a meeting at our office for all Bonners.
We hope to hear from you soon!
Best regards,
Janeen

[] Foundation Summer Interns
You've glimpsed them in videos, heard their voice on their phone, received random emails from them, or benefited from their leadership at SLI. Who are they? They're our Bonner Foundation Summer Interns! Throughout the summer they'll give you little updates on what they've been working on. We've already said farewell to two interns who worked with us through SLI: Chaz Barracks (University of Richmond) and Juliet Carrington (Guilford).
Mike Austerlitz * Hobart & William Smith Colleges * Class of 2011 * mike@bonner.org
This is Mike's second summer at the Foundation. He just finished his first year as a transfer at Hobart and had a great year. He says, "I had an amazing time at SLI! I can't wait for the RESULTS conference. We've been steadily working on post-SLI things, including fleshing out the Senior Intern and Congress tracks."
Kelly Behrend * University of Richmond * Class of 2010 * kelly@bonner.org
This is also Kelly's second summer at the Foundation. She just got back from a year studying abroad in Spain and Ireland, so you can guess we'll see that influence in her work.
Hi everyone! Happy summer! I'm looking forward to another summer well spent at the Bonner Foundation. It's good to be back. :)
I had a great time at SLI and thought that it was a really successful meeting. I was involved with planning/presenting the Senior Intern Track and facilitated the Global Issues/Diversity from Issue to Impact Track.
Now that I'm back, I'm working on the Senior Intern Track follow-up with Mike and developing a brand new Bonner project- a service abroad handbook! I'm excited about what this may look like. If you have any ideas or suggestions and want to talk about it, let me know. Other projects us interns will be working on this summer include the Bonner Video Project, PolicyOptions, Serve 2.0 Grantee Outreach, and preparing for my favorite meeting- the New Director's Meeting!
Marisa Frey * Allegheny College * Class of 2010 * marisa@bonner.org Marisa (yes, that's one "s") is a Bonner Leader from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. She also just studied abroad through the Semester at Sea program. I hope everyone is having a great week and finally catching up from SLI! I really enjoyed the conference and got a lot out of it, including ideas for some great summer projects! I worked on the Congress Track as well as the Environmental Issue Track. Both offered some great insight into what has been going on in the Bonner Network at large.
I will be working on a lot of the Congress Track follow-up, as well as looking forward to the fall congress meeting. I am really excited about using all of the great suggestions and enthusiasm I have seen thus far to work on improving congress as a whole. As interns, we will also be collaborating on all of the other meetings and projects, including the Senior Intern Track, Bonner Video Project, etc. Finally, I have recently gotten a bonner.org email address which is marisa@bonner.org. Feel free to get in touch with me that way. I hope you all have a great weekend!! **********
