At Hobart and William Smith, the "Bonners” are the drivers for many of the new initiatives of the Center for Community Eengagement and Service-Learning, devoting 10 hours a week in organizing students and working with the community in the areas of Literacy, Service-Learning, Political Activism, Environmental Outreach, Disaster Response, Geneva Highschool Outreach, Boys and Girls Club of Geneva, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Center for Leadership, Early Education/Preschool, and the “What Do You Stand For?” initiative. Each receives a stipend as well as extensive leadership training and networking opportunities. If they complete 300 hours and choose to pursue it, they may also receive a $1,000 AmeriCorps Award, which is matched by HWS for non-seniors. The intent is for the program to continue to grow for the next several years and expand as leaders continue to expand and serve in issue areas and local agencies, building service teams at each site.
As part of the Bonner Program's Student Development Model, the Bonner Leaders also participate in regular training and reflection activities sponsored by the HWS, our community partners and the Bonner Foundation.

THE CENTER FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND SERVICE LEARNING AT A GLANCE
At Hobart and William Smith Colleges, a liberal arts education is more than a major and a minor and fulfilling the 8 Curricular Goals. It is about producing graduates who have the experience and skills to become active citizens who are engaged leaders in their communities. The Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning (CCESL) is at the heart of this enterprise. The CCESL stands for learning through service that produces students who are civically engaged and graduates who are active, global citizens. It does this by providing the opportunities that help students build the skills necessary for active citizenship.
Through HWS Compass,students are encouraged to explore the many facets of service to society. A three tiered program, Compass provides experiences in Community Service, Civic Engagement, and Civic Leadership that chart the course to a life of Engaged Citizenship. Students are connected with service and engagement opportunities on-campus, in the area surrounding Geneva, outside the local region and even internationally. These experiences are meant to help students develop citizenship skills such as leadership, self-awareness, and recognizing societal needs while making a material change that will help meet identified community needs. A major component of these experiences is academic and co-curricular service-learning, linking the service activity to intentional reflection that clearly places the service in a larger context, whether that is with classroom content or experiencing first hand the response to Hurricane Katrina.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
There are many successes and highlights from the Bonner Leader Program at HWS for the 2008-2009 academic year. In August of 2008 the Bonner Leader for Civic Engagement and Political Activism spear headed a voter registration drive, and successfully registered a record number of students for the Classes of 2012. In the months of September, October and November the Bonner Leaders participated in Days of Service. In an effort to support the HWS Green Initiative, Bonner Leader for Environmental Outreach worked on many projects, including bringing guest speaker Andy Fellenz, a local organic farmer to campus to speak. In February, Bonner Leader for CCESL Outreach helped coordinate a record breaking Blood Drive with 126 donors (during flu season). The senior Bonner Leaders, Jacqui Sands and Rayza Santiago both participated in the Senior Syposium and presented a summary of their work as Bonner Leaders. The Bonner Leader for Literacy assisted with coordination of a new event Book Fest 2009, an event open to the greater Geneva community advocating literacy and reading for children, a record 650 people attended. For the Spring semester the Bonner Leaders for the Boys and Girls Club worked to establish the “Gimme Five” program, a program that encourages HWS students to volunteer five hours of their time at the Boys and Girls Club. The Bonner Leader for Big Brothers Big Sisters assisted with the 3rd Annual Bowl for Kids Sake, raising $4000 for the HWS Big Brothers Big Sisters program, this surpassed the fundraising goal by $1000.
As part of the Compass program, each entering class at HWS is asked to identify a cause or issue it would like to address to produce a meaningful change over the course of their four years at the Colleges. Before they arrive on campus incoming students receive a survey asking "What Do You Stand For?" In 2007-08, inaugural year of the initiative, an innovative partnership was formed between the HWS Classes of 2011 and the Geneva High School (GHS) Class of 2011. With a Bonner Leader’s facilitation, student representatives from the classes brainstormed and collaboratively established the "Local to Global"(L2G) initiative, a creative way for the HWS and GHS students to select an organization or social injustice and work to address it. For the first year, L2G activities remained local and included over 1,000 cans of food collected for the local food pantry. During the 2008-2009 year, the classes will work on a regional or statewide issue, then during their junior year they'll combine resources and talent on a national issue, and finally during their senior year they will look internationally.
The Bonner Leader for Civic Engagement and Political Activism was instrumental in getting students politically and civically engaged in the 2007-2008 school year. Examples of activities include: The Project Vote Smart Bus came to campus in Fall '07. The Colleges also hosted President's Forum speaker Chris Myers Ash, the co-founder of the United States Public Service Academy. The Bonner leader also organized a Super Tuesday Night party by mobilizing members of HWS Votes. The event was held in the campus pub and included such attendees as students, faculty, staff, Geneva's Mayor, and other Geneva community members. The civic engagement also included work towards spreading awareness about the Gulf Coast Civic Works Act and the movement behind it. If passed, the bill will create 100,000 WPA type jobs to rebuild the Gulf Coast since Hurricane Katrina.
In 2007-2008 the Bonner Leader for Literacy was successful in securing grants for First Book Geneva, successfully coordinating programs such as America Reads, and writing an article named: "Don't Forget the Illiteracy Problem" which was published in the Finger Lakes Times.
