  •  Refugee & Immigration Services
    • ongoing school year site
    • focus on language skills and preparation for citizenship test
    • serves adults in Metro Richmond area
    • growing Bonner Scholars presence with 8 continuing Bonners serving (2 of whom are seniors and been the site for at least 2 academic years)
    • potential to expand beyond language skills to computer skills, access to social services, and other effective integration services
  • On-campus English As a Second Language Program (coordinated by the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement)
    • ongoing CCE initiative
    • focus on language skills and practical application as determined by tutee (e.g., GED preparation, citizenship preparation, etc.)
    • serves on campus staff for whom English is not first language
    • will have a Bonner Scholar coordinator 2009-10
    • potential to expand by offering unique, flexible hours for shift employees, connect to local literacy organization for advanced curriculum
  • Cross Over Clinic
    • ongoing school year site
    • one focus of the site is translation of health care services for Spanish-speaking population
    • serves Metro Richmond community
    • have 2 continuing Bonners at West End location
    • potential to expand by encouraging a Southside location placement in spring 2010 and in 2010-2011 school year, participate in outreach efforts to Spanish-speaking communities in Richmond
  • International Hospital for Children
    • ongoing school year site
    • focus on health care for underserved third world countries
    • serves 6 countries by sending medical teams to those countries and bringing patients with more complex cases to Richmond
    • 2 Bonners who served at IHC for at least 2 years graduated in 2009
    • Bonner serving with IHC in summer 2009
    • potential to expand by encouraging additional Bonner placements in spring 2010 and encouraging Bonner serving there this summer to explore unique opportunities for Bonner Scholars' involvement
  • Alternative Spring Break: Peru
    • spring break trip coordinated by faculty member Rick Mayes
    • focus on healthcare for underserved countries
    • empowers students to operate health outreach clinics
    • 2 Bonners have participated
    • potential to encourage more Bonners to participate and take leadership roles
  • Alternative Spring Break: Guatemala
    • student-led spring break trip with coordination support from CCE (past support from Chaplaincy); sponsored by Highland Support Project
    • focus on community-building, sustainability, and micro-enterprise
    • 2 Bonners helped coordinate the first ASB trips to Guatemala
    • 1 Bonner served with HSP as a school-year and summer site in the past
    • potential to expand by encouraging more Bonners to participate, take leadership roles, and partner with other regional schools (Bonners and otherwise) to participate in the service opportunities

  • Program & Policy Associate (newly created leadership position) is charged with completing an issue or research brief, participating in at least 2 trainings applicable to his/her issue, and coordinating at least one campus-wide program for spring 2010--if/when PPA is chosen who focuses on Global Issues & Diversity, there is an opportunity for this initiatives to tackle this issue.
