Education - Wofford College

Page history last edited by Jessalyn Story 14 years, 10 months ago

We are actually focusing on Environment and Natural Resources. We have tried to change this heading numerous times but unsuccessfully. Please keep this in mind as you read through our work.

Service  |  Academic Work  |  Education & Training  |  Capacity Building  |  Deliberative Democracy

Types of Service   short-term  |  ongoing school year  |  summer

  • Students at Wofford College have served environmental and natural resource management organizations and efforts in a variety of forms.
  • On campus, students have participated in the nation-wide Recyclemania competition for the last two springs.
  • Bonner Scholars and other interested students have worked as interns or volunteers with area agencies, such as SPACE (Spartanburg Area Conservancy), Upstate Forever (smart-growth, New Urbanism, sustainable communities), the Palmetto Conservation Foundation, the Glendale Outdoor Leadership School, "Meet the Creek" days with local elementary youth, the Coalition to Control Kudzu without Chemicals, and many more.
  • In February 2008, Wofford students formed into the Wofford College Go Green (WOCOGG) Initiative, a coalition of students and student groups whose mission is to promote awareness and action on environmental sustainability and climate justice. WOCOGG's work has included the adoption of the Real Food Challenge, a nationwide intercollegiate campaign that aims to shape campus food service providers' purchasing policies to include increasingly more justly and sustainably grown food.
  • Members of WOCOGG have accepted summer internships with Aramark Food Services and the Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF).
  • WOCOGG was a founding coalition member of the Spartanburg Intercollegiate Green Alliance (SIGA), which formed in March 2008.

Academic Work   courses  |  service-learning  |  CBR and policy research   |  departments and institutes

  • Wofford College curricular and co-curricular opportunities have evolved over the last 50 years to include more opportunities for students to learn about the environment and natural resources. Traditionally, coursework in the environment and natural resources fell under the departments of Geology, Sociology, Biology, Chemistry, and English.
  • In the last year, Wofford College faculty approved an interdisciplinary major and minor in Environmental Studies, for which students can earn either a B.S. and/or a B.A. The Environmental Studies department draws upon coursework from multiple departments, with a core curriculum focusing on the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
  • Wofford College's January Term (Interim) generally has several options related to the environment and natural resources. This past year, students took courses ranging from the writing of Michael Pollan to the philosophy and applications of "Living Green."
  • Wofford's Community of Scholars program includes research and service opportunities for select students and faculty during the summer.

Education & Training   forums  |  workshops  |  reflection activities

  • As part of Wofford's Gold, Black and Green initiative, students, faculty and staff have organized forums and workshops related to climate action, global warming, food justice and sustainability, and water issues.
  • The GBG initiative included a special Earth Week "Environmental Sustainability World Cafe," at which members of the campus community reflected on the meaning of the terms "green" and "sustainability" and developed questions that the campus' Presidents Climate Commitment (PCC) Task Force addressed in their recent retreat.

Campus and Organizational Capacity-Building   training  |  fundraising  |  resource development

  • The PCC Task Force is in the process of developing a long-term climate action plan, which will include target dates and goals for the campus' effort to "go green." Possible goals considered include fundraising, developing on-campus student internships/trainings, and integrating curricular and co-curricular efforts.

Research, Policy Analysis, Deliberative Democracy   evaluations  |  policy research  | issue forums  |  advocacy

  • As part of Wofford's Gold, Black and Green initiative, students, faculty and staff have organized forums and workshops related to climate action, global warming, food justice and sustainability, and water issues. All forums have an action component that aims to affect campus and/or governmental policy
  • Wofford's new Environmental Studies Center at Glendale Shoals is a cutting-edge facility designed to (1) integrate scientific and humanities research and (2) serve as a bridge between the campus and the Spartanburg through community-wide forums, workshops and actions.
