2009 ANNUAL REPORT OF PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

Please add narrative text that responds to the questions in the four categories below.

Implementation of Student Development

What was the structure and content for the implementation of the developmental model this year?  In particular, please share (no more than one page text needed):

  • The Structure for training, courses, & meetings
    • All Bonners Attend weekly Bonner meetings.  Each month's meetings consist of two All-Bonner, a Class, and a Bonner Love Team (BLT) meetings.
      • All-Bonner meetings feature a speaker, a student-led presentation, or student-led reflection.
      • Class meeting time is used for student development-based speakers utilizing representatives from other offices on campus (Student Academic Support, Career Services), student-led reflection, or planning time for Cornerstone Activities.
      • There were four Bonner Love Teams - Education, Envrionment, Human Needs, and Public Safety.  BLTs meet monthly to research a specific issue within their topic, bring in speakers from the community, plan an All-Bonner meeting presentation, and assess how the issues within their topic related to local placements.  The Education and Human Needs BLTs also planned and implemented service projects within the Greencastle community.
    • First-Years participate in a Winter Term seminar as part of the First-Year Trip.  More details are listed below.
  • Cornerstone Activities including First Year Trip, Second Year Exchange, Third Year (and beyond) Leadership Roles, and Senior Capstone & Presentation of Learning
    • First-Year Orientation
      • First-Year Bonners arrive early to attend a three-day Bonner orientation to the Bonner Scholars Program and Greencastle community, led in large part by upper class Bonner mentors.  Students participate in team building activities, reflect on the meaning of service, tour several Bonner community partner agencies, and meet with Jennie Coy in Financial Aid, President Brian Casey, and Chancellor Bob Bottoms.
    • First-Year Bonner Winter Term (three weeks in January) consists of a two week seminar and one week trip to Chicago.
      • Participants explore each of the Common Commitments during the seminar through readings from "The Impossible Will Take a Little While", listening to "This I Believe" essays, campus and community speakers, Bonner Training Modules, and other activities.  Students also work in teams on activities for the community Martin Luther King Jr. Day event.
      • Bonners are hosted by the Brother David Darst Center in Chicago and learn more about hunger, homelessness, and social justice through service, speakers, and reflection.
      • When students return to campus they write and present their own "This I Believe" essay and meet with seminar facilitators to evaluate their performance in the course and trip.
    • Sophomore Service Exchange
      • DePauw University sophomores met with Earlham College sophomores at the Indianapolis Peace Institute.  Students then worked with Peace Institute partner, Mid North Food Pantry, breaking ground for a new community garden in an Indianapolis west side neighborhood.  Before departing, students participated in a reflection at the site of an established community garden nearby.
    • Junior Leadership
      • This year juniors participated in the following service leadership roles: Bonner Student President, Bonner Student Vice President, Bonner Junior Class Chair, Community Outreach Intern for the Hartman House, Bonner WT Seminar Assistant, Compton Center for Peace and Justice Interns.  Juniors also served in several leadership roles across campus.
    • Senior Convocation
      • Thanks to the planning of Senior Interns, Chloie Favinger and Rebekah Turner, we had the best Senior Convocation dinner in years!  Chloie and Rebekah not only worked on all the logistical arrangements, but also met with the senior class as a whole and each senior individually to ensure each presentation was thoughfully prepared and ready well in advance of the Convocation.
    • Senior Breakfast
      • The Bonner staff hosts a breakfast the morning of commencement for graduating seniors and their families to recognize their four year commitment to service and community
      • The Senior Interns also shared their reflections on the last four years and hope for their future.
  • Roles of Student Leaders in integration of the Serve 2.0 initiative (e.g., developing and using web-based tools for service)
    • Serve 2.0 Interns
      • Two internships to work directly with Serve 2.0 initiatives were developed and filled in October 2008.  The interns, Emma Minx and Naiquan Greene, chose to focus on the Bonner Video Project.  However, both students had difficulty maintaining their internship in the spring due to other commitments.
    • BWBRS Intern
      • The BWBRS Intern, Megan Morgeson, also worked with the program's Moodle site.  She updated optional training and enrichment activities on the site and added links to useful documents.  Moodle was also used for journaling this year.
