CAMPUS AT A GLANCE

Founded in 1837 by the Methodist Church, DePauw University is a private, selective, coeducational, residential, undergraduate College of Liberal Arts and School of Music. One hundred percent of students live on campus and can choose from a diversity of living options - everything from traditional residence halls to Greek Houses, from singles to suites, from University-owned apartments and duplexes to theme houses. In our communities, residents have the opportunity to become involved in leadership, athletic, and social events. Our rich mix of extracurricular offerings consist of more than 95 clubs and organizations, including academic and athletic clubs, fraternities, sororities, and political and service organizations.

MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

A Year At A Glance:

Bonner Orientation: Every August we welcome twenty new Bonner scholars and 4 or 5 mentors to our Bonner Orientation.  Common staples of the orientation include: dinner with the president, a "Tour de Greencastle" visiting community partner sites, Bonner history, cooking dinner together, a rock climbing wall, and tons of bonding events!  We have found that working with students before school gives them a sense of the Bonner family before the whirlwind of activities picks up; it also allows students to get a feel for the Bonner programming and expectations.

All-Bonner Retreat: During the fall semester the whole Bonner program takes a day to spend time together doing a service project and seeing a new part of Putnam County. Last year, we went to the Cataract Falls State Park and helped to clean the trails and waterways. We also were able to picnic at the covered bridge and spend quality time with our fellow Bonners through games, activities, and reflection activities.

First-Year Seminar and Trip:  Our first-year Bonners take a required Winter Term course in January titled

"Civic Education from Classroom to Community."  This course utilizes the six Bonner Common Commitments

as a framework, and concludes with a "This I Believe" writing exercise.  Our first-year service trip is an

element of this course.  For the fourth consecutive year, The Brother David Darst Center for Justice and

Peace, Spirituality and Education (www.brdaviddarstcenter.org) in Chicago served as our host for the trip.

Our service sites included REST warming shelters, Su Casa, San Miguel Schools, and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

2008-2009 Highlights

  • We had an amazing group of Bonner student leaders on the Exec board!
  • Bonner Love Teams were established this year to explore more of the social justice issues related to service.  The topics were Education, Environment, Human Needs, and Public Safety.
  • Our First Year Winter Term Seminar and Trip is always a huge success thanks for our fantastic partners in the community and across campus, The Brother David Darst Center who host us in Chicago for our service and social justice trip, and of course our incredible first-year Bonners who consistently surprise us with their candor and sincerity.
  • The Community Round table was a new intitiative in partnership with the City of Greencastle Mayor's Office to bring together a small group of topic-specific experts from the campus and community to meet, engage in discussion, and share ideas.
  • The Senior Convocation was the best senior capstone dinner and presentations in years thanks to the vision and planning of our amazing Senior interns.

Issue-Based Research

General Support:

Things are going well. Few first year students that they have lost (suspended for spring semester-3). Winter term class went really well-The Impossible Will Take a While, guest speakers, reading, This I believe project. First year service trip to Chicago over break-also went well. "Students were amazing." They have a few folks registered for Impact Conference. Heard the Bonner program referenced in Chicago-"Service Minded Students Rewarded with Scholarship"-Justin Pope, Associate Press.

Calling for support on issue brief. First time, Navigating their way. There is a lot of momentum on campus in terms of environment. Will need support for putting in the package of an issue brief.

Will work on doing campus wiki/supporting students leading the charge in technology.

If visited, want policy focus. There is also a new President on campus. It would be helpful to talk with him and get on the same page. Faculty Engagement.

Each year in December, the Bonner Scholars coordinate the 5000 Lights Luminaria on the DePauw campus.

This year's luminaria event was held in conjunction with the Greencastle Civic League's "Lights of Love"

program on the town square.  In this photo, Bonner Scholar Bryn Gehring sets up one of the luminaria.

The DePauw Bonner class of 2011 poses at the Darst Center before departing from the Chicago service

trip in January.

BONNER GRAPHIC

The Bonner Graphic was created by the Bonner Public Relations Committee. The role of the Bonner Graphic is two-fold. First, we aim to provide recognition of notable accolades and  accomplishments that result from Bonner Scholars and their service. Second, we seek to act as a source of information, opinion, and inspiration for those within the Bonner community whose efforts we chronicle, as well as interested audiences in the community at-large who are interested in learning more about community activism and philanthropy.
