MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)
Davidson College's Statement of Purpose says that "the primary purpose of Davidson College is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service." This commitment to service is clear from the moment students are enrolled at Davidson, through programs like the Service Odyssey, which allows students to participate in service during the summer before they enter as first-year students. All first-years participate in the Community Walk during Orientation, which introduces them both to the community and to the other service opportunities available.
Davidson's Bonner program begins with placement in the afterschool program (LEARN Works) at the Ada Jenkins Community Center, which provides tutoring and mentoring for local under-resourced elementary and middle school children. This placement allows first-year Bonners to hit the ground running with service when they arrive at Davidson and to work closely and bond with their classmates. First year Bonner students traditionally work together to lead an on-campus Trick-or-Treat event for the children from Ada's afterschool program. After the first-year, Bonners self-select into involvement with other community partners as their interests and passions grow and develop. Often, these interests and passions manifest themselves in programs such as Service Saturdays, Alternative Breaks and participation in the Civic Engagement Council (an umbrella organization for student-led service organizations). These programs allow Bonners to be leaders and to focus on Davidson's commitment to service alongside the rest of the student body. Davidson's Bonner Scholars program is unique in its diversity of involvement, quality of relationships with community partners and position in the greater context of service at Davidson College as a whole.
