CAMPUS AT A GLANCE (brief description)

Davidson College is an institution of higher learning established in 1837 by Presbyterians of North Carolina.  The primary purpose of the college is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service.  As a college that welcomes students, faculty, and staff from a variety of nationalities, ethnic groups, and traditions, Davidson values diversity, recognizing the dignity and worth of every person. Therefore, Davidson provides a range of opportunities for worship, civil debate, and teaching that enrich mind and spirit. Further, Davidson challenges students to engage in service to prepare themselves for lives of growth and giving.

MORE ABOUT US (our partners, trips, structure, best or unique practices)

Davidson College's Statement of Purpose says that "the primary purpose of Davidson College is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service."  This commitment to service is clear from the moment students are enrolled at Davidson, through programs like the Service Odyssey, which allows students to participate in service during the summer before they enter as first-year students.  All first-years participate in the Freshmen Service Walk during Orientation, which introduces them both to the community and to the other service opportunities available.  A student-led movement on campus called Engage for Change, started in the Spring of 2006, chooses a yearly theme to unify and focus advocacy and service efforts at Davidson for the year.  Although these service programs are not exclusively for Bonner Scholars many of them participate in and often help to organize the efforts.

Davidson's Bonner program begins with placement in the afterschool program at the Ada Jenkins Community Center, which provides tutoring and mentoring for local at-risk elementary school children.  This placement allows first-year Bonners to hit the ground running with service when they arrive at Davidson and to work closely and bond with their classmates.  First year Bonner students traditionally work together to lead an on-campus Trick-or-Treat event for the children from Ada's afterschool program.  After the first-year, Bonners self-select into involvement with other community partners as their interests and passions grow and develop.  Often, these interests and passions manifest themelves in programs such as Service Saturdays, Alternative Breaks, International Service Trips, and participation in United Community Action (an umbrella organization for direct service).  These programs allow Bonners to be leaders and to focus on Davidson's commitment to service alongside the rest of the student body.  Davidson's Bonner Scholars program is unique in its diversity of involvement, quality of relationships with community partners and position in the greater context of service at Davidson College as a whole.

2008-2009 Highlights

  • Weaved issue education into curriculum throughout the year.  One popular session was an "Issue Cafe" that allowed for brainstorming and movement into different groups to discuss topics of education, health, environment and housing.  An example of one of our issue briefs.
  • The second year class took on planning of a service exchange and recommitment ceremony that can serve as models for future years.  In addition, the senior class revamped their Presentations of Learning to include a more intimate dinner for just the class members followed with a coffeehouse style of presentation to guests.
  • January All Bonner Retreat - We offered workshops on web tools (Heather Cronk presented) to launch our new program wiki.  We also offered a reflection session with a tai-chi component and a potluck social event that took on a "Top Chef" style of competition with teams that were also groups for the Video Challenge.
