[1] Questions from the Network

Bonner Graduation Stoles

At Oberlin, two of our senior interns are interested in doing Bonner graduation stoles or ropes for commencement this May. Does your campus do anything like this? We are gathering ideas and researching vendors and costs, any information you can provide us would be greatly appreciated.

Please email Oberlin College Bonner Director, Trecia Pottinger at trecia.pottinger@oberlin.edu with any information or suggestions.

How Do You Stay in Contact with Bonner Alumni?

At Davidson, although we have an informal network to stay in touch with many of our graduates, we don’t have much of a structure.  We’re considering a LinkedIn group to help alums to connect and network with each other and perhaps making more frequent/intentional opportunities to gather during major campus events.  If you do any of these things, if you’ve tried and think they're bad ideas, or if you have other ideas, they are ALL appreciated.  The more info we can gather the better!

Please email Davidson College Bonner Director, Kristin Booher (krbooher@davidson.edu) with any comments or suggestions.  Thank you!!

[2] Big Idea Progress Report: Due Date Extended

The deadline for Congress Representatives to submit your program's Big Idea Progress Report has been extended to Monday, February 22. The report is online and can be found through this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/T2NG8CL

[3] AmeriCorps Reminder

If you still have active National AmeriCorps members in your program, please remember to continue to give attention to making position descriptions for those members as specific and thorough as possible, to show that each position complies with the rules for eligibility, which are shown here: http://bonnernetwork.pbworks.com/w/page/82476955/National%20Bonner%20AmeriCorps%20-%20Eligible%20Positions.

If you have any doubt about the eligibility of a position, please consult with Foundation staff before a member starts to log hours in that position.

[4] Bonner Advisory Board (BAB) Application Available

Launched in 2009, the Bonner Advisory Board (BAB) is a cohort of current Bonner student leaders that give their voice to the Bonner Network. During their full year of service, accepted members participate in monthly conference calls with Foundation staff, assist in the planning and facilitating of Bonner Congress and SLI, as well as co-manage the Big Idea Project.

Please encourage your Bonners to Apply by April 1st! Please see attached for the pdf version of the 2016-2017 BAB application.………………………………………………………………………………

[5] Learning Circles: A Train-the-Trainers Approach

The ability to engage in dialogue and create a safe and respectful context for sharing ideas, views, and experiences is vital in the work of civic engagement leaders. A Learning Circle is a format for dialogue that invites participation in a manner that may be different from the typical conversational format, as it is not based on debate. It is a valuable and effective mode of communication that, when utilized correctly, can be a foundation for deep dialogue. This format has been used for decades by organizers and has been popular with faculty and others, such as in the Invisible College founded in the mid-1980's. A Learning Circle can prompt an exchange of ideas that may support participants' deeper learning or lead to the formulation of action steps and plans that participants can take back to their own communities or organizations.

[6] Breaking the Cycle

Anne-Marie Nuñez suggests looking to Hispanic-Serving Institutions as a model for how to build an inclusive campus racial climate. Minority-Serving Institutions have great potential to teach us lessons about what campuses can do to improve the racial and ethnic climate, as these institutions have been serving students of color for years. See below to read more about the proposed strategies and how college leaders can implement them.
