MORE ABOUT US Our Bonner Program, in the words of our bonners:
"We, the Bonner Leaders, are striving to build a bridge between the campus and the Charleston community. Each of us has committed to 450 hours of community service every year. Whether it is working with a fourth grader who doesn’t know how to read, building the character of high school students, or making connections across a militarized border; we know we aren’t just bettering ourselves, but our community as well. The innovativeness of our program makes service appealing and accessible to a diverse audience of college students. Through the sharing of our uniqueness and diversity, we have created our own “family” at the College of Charleston. " -The Bonner Team
Our First Year:
In their first year of existence, the College of Charleston Bonner Leaders created multiple initiatives that reached out to their fellow students, faculty, and community members while simultaneously building partnerships with the local, national, and international community. The success of these events established the Bonner Leaders program as an important and valuable component of the College of Charleston. Two of these events were particularly powerful in establishing the Bonner Leaders as an active program that builds strong connections with all levels of communities: The First Year Trip and our first annual Engage and Empower week.
First Year Trip: During the Winter Break, many Bonner Leaders forwent the traditional holiday activities and instead chose to spend their time pursuing various service activities in San Diego, California. While there, the Leaders worked on environmental issues with Aquatic Adventures, built an organic garden at the World Beat Cultural Center, and helped alleviate immigraiton issues with Border Angels--an organization dedicated to relieving suffering and death among individuals crossing the San Diego/Mexico border. Enrique Morones--Border Angels' founder--is one of the most well known advocates for immigrant rights. Soon after their visit to San Diego, the Bonner Leaders brought this extraordinary man to the College of Charleston campus, in the process raising awareness of immigrant issues in Charleston and South Carolina.
Enrique Morones comes to CofC: After working with Border Angels and Enrique Morones in San Diego, our Bonners felt inspired to bring him to the CofC campus and spread the word about immigration issues. During his Marcha Migrante, up the East Coast to Washington D.C., he made a stop at CofC and led a discussion over breakfast for 50 students/faculty/community members. Check out his website at
Engage and Empower: A few weeks after Mr. Morones' appearance at the College of Charleston, the Bonners again made a splash on campus with first annual Engage and Empower week. For five days Juniors and Seniors in the Bonner program hosted a series of events designed to highlight the most concerning issues facing the Charleston community. These events fostered a dialogue between the students, faculty, and community members as to how best tackle Charleston's obstacles head on. Events included: a panel discussion on homelessness and housing issues, a community forum discussing hte effects of school closings on elementary students, coffee shop talks over the topic of child soldiers, and activites designed to create a better understanding of both Autism and various physical and intellectual disabilities. Over 150 students, faculty, and community members attended these events, one of which was featured on a front page in the Charleston newspaper. Read it Here.
Service Saturdays: One Saturday each month all of the Bonners participate in a service saturday. The activity changes each month as mentor/mentee pairs choose and plan the projects.
