Organization Description: The Center for Literacy is an intedisciplinary research and service unit based within the College of Education. The Center furthers the mission of The University of Akron and the College of Education through a variety of programs that support development of expertise with and dissemination of knowledge about literacy. Broadly defined, literacy refers to basic communication and calculation skills required for succeeding in a modern society. Central is the ability to construct meaning from print in a variety of contexts (schools, home, workplace, and community) and forms (alphabetic, numeric, technological, and pictorial) for both individual and interactive purposes. Literacy requires integration of a complex set of skills, abilities, and knowledge. The Center's overriding purpose, then, is to support the literacy development of children and adults through teaching and learning, scholarship, and service projects that assist in this integrative process. Activities of the Center for Literacy further knowledge, diversity, technology and ethics through sponsorship of activities in four primary areas: 1.) education of UA students through classroom instruction, field and service experiences; 2.) community engagement through outreach programs; 3.) support of scholarly and intedisciplinary research that links faculty and

students with classroom teachers, youth and adults in need of assistance; and 4.) teacher professional development through programs that support thoughtful and reflective practice in a learning community.
