Organization Description:Student Action with Farmworkers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each otherís lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. SAF accomplishes its mission by coordinating summer internships and carrying out community education, advocacy, and community and labor organizing work.

 

SAF has been building student-farmworker solidarity since 1992. SAF works with students, who need connections to progressive social justice movements; farmworkers, one of the hardest-working yet most marginalized populations in our society; as well as farmworker agencies and community groups, which need greater human resources to carry out their work.

Internship Position


Internship Description: SAF links students with farmworkers to improve the living & working conditions of farmworkers in the Carolinas and to build student commitment to social justice and direct action. Into the Fields is a ten-week internship and leadership development program for college students to work for fairness in our agricultural industries. Through the Into the Fields program, college students from diverse backgrounds spend the summer working full-time with farmworkers to promote greater respect and justice for the people who supply food for our tables.

 

Into the Fields Interns are matched with community-based farmworker advocacy organizations. Positions are available in the following fields: Union Organizing, Adult Education & Basic Services, Legal Aid Programs, Migrant Education Programs, Migrant Health Clinics, Health Research.

 

In addition to training and work at placement sites, interns will choose to complete a folklife documentary project or to participate in the Levante Theater Group. 

 

Applicants may apply for academic credit.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

-College students from farmworker families nationwide or Students currently attending a college or university in the Carolinas. 

-Spanish skills are required for most placements.
