Organization Description: The Laughlin Memorial Chapel is a community center that serves at-risk children and youth through programs that include after-school and evening activities, meals (over 17,000 served annually), Freedom School summer camp, job training programs, hosting workcamp groups, and many mentoring programs and opportunities.

 

The Laughlin Chapel serves 250 different children in a community that is racially diverse.  Community challenges include poor housing (38% of the housing is abandoned), a lack of male role models, and children and youth who are falling behind academically.  The Chapel is a mission of the Presbyterian Church.

Internship Position


Internship Description: A summer intern would work in the Freedom School summer camp program for eight weeks.  Training for the program would also include a one-week period in early June in Knoxville, TN.  The Freedom School serves about 100 children in all age groups with a program that begins each day with breakfast and concludes each day at mid-afternoon.  Freedom Schools, offered in partnership with the Children's Defense Fund, is a reading enrichment curriculum supplimented by activities that include swimming, music, African drumming, art, cooking, computers, and recreation.  African-American candidates are encouraged to apply in that over 2/3 of the children and youth served by the summer camp program are African-American.

Service Opportunity


 

Service Opportunity Description: Alternative Spring Break activities are offered for four-week period, March 13-April 7, 2006.  Work would include a Soup Kitchen/Meals on Wheels site as well as after-school programs for "at-risk" children, over 90% of whom qualify for free/reduced meals at school.  There would also be some daily reflection/discussion about issues of Appalachia, poverty, and related issues offered by the staff of the Chapel in partnership with the faculty of Wheeling Jesuit University.
