Internship Position

Internship Description: Each semester and during the summer months, Common Cause offers internships to students from across the country. Working closely with staff and volunteers, interns do grassroots organizing, contribute research to policy papers and investigative studies, monitor congressional committee meetings, function as press office aides, and serve as administrative aides.

Through training and daily work experience, interns gain a broad understanding of the workings of Congress and the Executive Branch, and learn how a nonpartisan grassroots citizens' organization lobbies elected officials. Weekly briefings with Common Cause staff keep interns updated on the legislative status of Common Cause issues and the political strategy we are pursuing.

In addition to the work experience gained in your specific department, you will get an insider's understanding of the legislative process, become a better citizen and student activist, learn more than you thought possible about campaign finance reform and ethics in government, and gain exposure to the way a large nonprofit organization operates. Through all this, you will have access to a wealth of information  (great for writing papers!) and will also have a great time! In our national office we have regularly scheduled social gatherings, and in the summer we field a softball team and organized fieldtrips and tours to some of the most interesting and enriching places in the Washington, DC area.  Interns can expect a very fun and positive work environment and form strong friendships with interns from all across the country.

Internships are available in our national office and in many states throughout the year.  Internship schedules are very flexible. We welcome full-time interns, but we can easily accommodate class schedules and other commitments.
