Organization Description

Admission Possible is helping break the cycle of poverty for low-income families and build an educated workforce for a globally competitive economy. To fulfill its mission, Admission Possible provides low-income students with an intensive curriculum of coaching and support to earn college admission and a degree. Admission Possible was founded on three fundamental beliefs. Many low-income high school students lack the resources to compete effectively for admission to colleges and universities. Colleges and universities are very interested in admitting students from low-income backgrounds, but have difficulty identifying and attracting them. In an increasingly diverse and global economy, the economic stability and competitiveness of theUnited States requires a highly educated workforce.

Admission Possible Twin Cities works with 17 metro-area high schools, currently serving 1,400 high school students. Admission Possible Milwaukee serves 245 high school students in seven high schools. In addition Admission Possible supports 2,750 high school program graduates as they pursue their college degree.

Overall, 98% of the students Admission Possible has assisted since the organization’s founding in 2000 have been admitted to college.

The Admission Possible team is made up of 65 full-time AmeriCorps members, 7 full-time AmeriCorps*VISTA members, and 26 full-time Leadership Team members. We are interested in working with the Bonner Foundation to recruit our AmeriCorps and VISTA members.

Internship Position

Internship Description: Some of our AmeriCorps members coach a group of 30-40 low-income students through either its junior or senior year of the Admission Possible curriculum. We also have three AmeriCorps*VISTA members who build the organization's capacity at headquarters with indirect service projects such as communication and fundraising, events planning and alumni programming. Other AmeriCorps members work to plan events such as the ACT, graduation celebration, campus visits and service days. We also have a team of college coaches working to track and support our program alumni who are now pursuing a college degree.

After successfully completing a term of service, AmeriCorps members who are enrolled in the National Service Trust are eligible to receive an education award. The education award can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education or training, or to repay qualified student loans. The award currently is $5,350 for a year of full-time service, with correspondingly lesser awards for part-time and reduced part-time service. A member has up to seven years after his or her term of service has ended to claim the award.

For those considering service with AmeriCorps*VISTA: AmeriCorps*VISTA members successfully completing a term of service in an approved national service position are eligible to receive either an education award or end-of-service stipend of $1,000. The education award option is subject to available education trust allocations to AmeriCorps*VISTA and must be selected prior to the start of service.

Living allowance -- If you serve full-time, you'll receive a modest living allowance. You won't get rich from it, but other AmeriCorps members have found that it covers their basic expenses.

Help with student loans -- If you already have student loans, you can use your education award to help pay them off. And while you're an AmeriCorps member, you may be eligible for deferment and forbearance on your student loans. Your lender can tell you for sure. If you're eligible, AmeriCorps will pay for the interest that is accrued on student loans for members who complete their service.
